A social science experiment in which playful millionaires turn a beggar (Eddie Murphy) into a commodities trader. Great script, great cast, great acting. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Despite a brutal murder scene and lots of shootings, this movie packs lots of laughters. A Detroit cop (Eddie Murphy) elopes to Los Angeles to investigate the murder of a childhood friend. There, he must play a cat-and-mouse game with the local police. Bonus: It's 1984, and the clothing styles and theme music are just wonderful. Don't bother watching the sequel. An alien space ship lands in New York—an inconspicuous ship sized and shaped like a human being, and staffed by a crew of eraser-size humanoids who make "Dave" (as the ship is soon named) interact with the locals as though Dave were human. I don't know why this film has such a low IMDB rating. Neither vulgar nor loud, it was the best I'd seen from Eddie Murphy in years, and it had me laughing on multiple occasions. Don't miss it! This Eddie Murphy film may not be a roarer, but it had a few good laughs and a delightful premise. It might even be devoid of profanity (though I cannot vouch for that). An African prince delays his arranged marriage for forty days and travels to New York with his valet in the hope of finding a bride he can truly love. Insisting to live in a run-down room in Queens so that no one will know his royal status, he takes a job cleaning up at a fast-food restaurant. Not only did I find pleasure in the fairy-tale plot and the actors' performances, I also enjoyed the extravagant decor of the palace in the African scenes—the studio must have thrown a bit of money at this. Well worth a watch, just don't expect your jaw to cramp from too much laughing. (Last viewed: July 2012)

There are a few laughs in this movie, but the pain you must endure to earn those isn't worth it. I'll admit that I'm highly prejudiced: with rare exceptions, I can't stand movies that deal with movie-making—as though the whole world revolved around Hollywood. The premise of this one is that a desperate director decides to shoot a movie without telling a movie star he will feature in it. Sadly, it's much worse than it sounds. There's lots of screaming, chaos, and terrible music to cover up the images. It might just be bad enough to qualify as a cult movie, but you'd have to ask someone who's interested in such things. BHC2: A typical sequel. More money, less juice. Idiotic plot, you only watch because of the actors. BHC3: better than number two, but still weak, though Alex Fowler and Serge give you plenty reason to smile. Lots of blood, not many laughs. (Last viewed: September 2009)

Being nostalgic for the glorious days of Eddie's first movies, I wanted to love this. I gave this movie twenty minutes, but it's plain unwatchable. Sad.
