A couple of aliens with pointy heads crash their space craft somewhere in America. As they await the rescue ship scheduled to pick them up after 18 years, they adapt to their new home. The poster may not inspire you to watch this film, but you have to ask yourself if you want to look smart tonight or if you want to laugh. The aliens are sometimes hard to understand, but what you do understand is funny. I enjoyed the guest appearances of comedy greats such as Adam Sandler and Seinfeld's Kramer and George. One of those low-rated movies that can really pull the laughs. (Last viewed: January 2012)

The walrus minder at a Hawaiian aquarium falls in love with a woman who has no short-term memory—every day, he must make her fall in love again. A few laughs, lots of chuckles, very very sweet, and delightfully chilled out thanks to the Hawaiian setting and holiday music. It's perhaps my favorite romantic comedy; which makes sense, seing that the plot has elements of a "Groundhog Day" in reverse. (Groundhog Day is one of my all-time favorite comedies. In it, Bill Murray keeps reliving the same day, and remembers it.) (Last viewed: Jun 2010 August 2011)

A widowed fireman worried that his kids won't get his pension if he dies pulls a favor and gets another straight fireman to marry him under Canadian law. Back in New York, a city council official becomes suspicious, forcing the two to keep up the pretense. I couldn't bring myself to watch this for a long time, but it turns to be much better that it sounds. In fact, it's pretty funny—a few laughs and lots of chuckles. There's none of the exaggerated effeminate acting you've come to expect from comedies that mine the gay theme. Adam Sandler and the rest of the cast do a surprisingly good job given the challenging task at hand. Worth a watch. (Last viewed: January 2013)

Happy Gilmore has always dreamed of becoming a professional ice hockey player, and although he has formidable power when shooting the puck, he cannot skate. When the IRS threatens to auction his grandma's house, Happy unwillingly enrolls on the pro golf circuit after discovering that he can drive the ball over an exceptional distance. Cute and often funny, but not tight enough that I'd want to watch it again. (Last viewed: September 2010)

A comedian at the top of his career (Adam Sandler) hires a comedian who is starting out to write jokes for his stand-up show. He has cancer but recovers midway through the movie, so we get a whole second film as a bonus. Not only did this movie make me laugh several times, it had a strong plot with characters that behave like real people (well, mostly).

Edit:
After watching Funny People a second time nine years later, I feel that this movie is an underrated little gem.

First off, the cast is spectacular. Adam Sandler has some funny bits — and some that flop, but that's the role, a thankless one. Seth Rogen is at his best. Jonah Hill is thrown in as a two-pack bonus. Several of the supporting actors made a name for themselves as comedians during the following years, such as Aubrey Plaza and Aziz Ansari from Parks and Recreation. Torsten Voges (someone I'd never heard of) is funny as a humorless German doctor. Jason Schwartzman and Leslie Mann are perfect for their roles and keep the smiles going. Eminem has a short but terrific intervention. And as a late treat in the final part of the movie, we're introduced to a new character played by Eric Bana, who featured in The Castle, perhaps the best Australian comedy of all times.

There is a prescient joke about Robin Williams slitting his wrists (at around 19'40" on my tape, during Rogen's first stand-up set). There are many other things to like. Are there some things to dislike? Yes. But overall, this is a really special film which I hope I remember to watch again ten years from now.

Wrongly accused of having lost his temper on an airplane, a man is ordered to undertake intense training in anger management under the supervision of a therapist who displays several symptoms of lunacy. Despite its numerous shortcomings, the movie made me laugh several times, thanks largely to Jack Nicholson's strong performance. This not Sandler's worst movie; nor (by far) is it his best. But if you're not expecting fireworks, the movie should have enough to keep you entertained. (Last viewed: May 2015)

Of the hundreds of comedy movies I've reviewed so far, this one has the second-lowest imdb rating. Since I usually dislike comedy that tries to draw laughter by featuring men playing women (a strange, enduring phenomenon), I was predisposed to join the ranks of the bashers, but for some reason Adam Sandler pulled off the drag thing for me. In fact, he pulled playing off two roles at onces—a Los Angeles advertising executive, and his twin sister who visits from their native Bronx for the holidays.

At the risk of sounding too contrarian, I'll advance that there were some good comedy moments in this film, especially in the first half. It's far from being the worst movie with Adam Sandler who, although he's starred in some terrific comedies, has also picked a number of duds. (Last viewed: August 2015)

For his entire life, a young man who sings at weddings has been dreaming of getting married, but his fiancee walks out on him on his big day. Meanwhile, a young woman who waits tables at the weddings he sings at is about to marry the wrong guy. This movie belongs more in the romance genre than with romantic comedies, but it has a few chuckles and it's extremely cute. The soundtrack is a bit of a 1980s best-of, which I am never sad about. It's also a treat to see Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore together "again" after 50 First Dates—which in fact won't be made for another six years. (Last viewed: Apr 2007 October 2012)

I like Adam Sandler, but this movie is an exercise in self-indulgence—and utter garbage. We're usually pretty generous about watching movies that don't start well (some take a while to develop) but we found this one unwatchable and stopped after 26 minutes. It felt like watching four friends hanging out and cracking mediocre jokes. I'm sure you can find three people to do that with (and actually laugh in the process): you don't need Adam Sandler and his buddies. (Last viewed: April 2012)

To take over the role of his retiring father as head of a major hotel chain, a young man who has lived a life of ignorant merriment must return to school and graduate through the twelve grades in under six months. I usually like Adam Sandler. He can be funny when he's a little goofy, but in this role he has set his goofiness level to over-the-top-and-off-the-charts. It is simply unbearable. At first I thought that perhaps I wasn't liking the movie because it was aimed at kids, but there are too many adult themes for that to be the case. It's just bad. (Last viewed: October 2012)

When the owner of a rural pizza restaurant learns that he has inherited a controlling stake in a New York media conglomerate, he has to swim with the sharks, while they have to learn to handle a straight-shooting small-town boy. Adam Sandler tries his best, but the producers spent too much money on wardrobe and too little on the script. That's too bad, because the story had potential: the only missing ingredient is the laughs. In the instant-millionaire genre, forget this one and watch the very funny Trading Places instead. Days before his wedding, a successful banker is reunited with his father, whom he had kept at bay for years. This movie is only in the "watch once" section for those who are curious about the work of Adam Sandlers; others can skip it. If you're ever in the mood to watch a bad movie, this is a decent choice. You know how sometimes bad can be good? I don't recall all the bad elements in That's My Boy—Adam's voice was certainly one of them—but there's enough badness here to keep you perversely entertained.
