About Moritz

( wikipedia | imdb )
Moritz may not be a comic genius, but he's a solid actor — as the range between his performances in Im Juli and Soul Kitchen amply demonstrates. He's no Harry Dean Stanton, but I like him, and I respect that he's dipped his toes more than once in the comedy genre.

Moritz Bleibtreu is said to have been born on Friday 13 August 1971, which would make him 52 years, 7 months and 15 days old (if this date is accurate and he is alive today).

Directed by Fatih Akın, my favorite German director, this movie is probably my favorite romantic comedy of all times. And I don't even speak German.

Hoping to get close to a man, a young woman tries to make him believe that their encounter was fate. He misreads the sign and follows the wrong woman all the way from Hamburg to Istanbul.

I don't know if this movie makes me laugh out loud, but it sure makes me grin a lot. It's incredibly sweet, and it has lots of texture. If you've never watched it, treat yourself. I watch it every five years or so and it's always equally as fresh.

Two young men sell cannabis products under the cover of a pizza delivery business. An undercover cop befriends them. There isn't much more to say about the plot. The movie is entertaining enough if your expectations are low, but it fails to deliver laughs.

There is a 2017 sequel, Lommbock.

Sixteen years after the first Lammbock, the partners in crime are reunited as Stefan, who now lives in Dubai, must return to Germany to pick up a document before his wedding, with the expected ensuing mayhem. Not a Hangover-grade mayhem, just enough to keep you a little bit entertained.

This wasn't really worse than the original. Watch once if you're interested in German contemporary culture.
