To fend off his anxious parents, a young man who has been rejected by several colleges prints out an acceptance letter from a fake college with a fake website. Things get out of hand when a hundred "students" offer him tuition. This movie is surprisingly not crass. By the same token, despite everyone's good intentions, it is surprisingly unfunny. I can't think of a good reason to watch it. (Last viewed: July 2015)

A rock star who speaks a language of his own is also a righter of wrongs. When he mentors America's children to stay away from tobacco and hamburgers, he gets in the cross-hairs of corporate America's big boss.
I enjoyed seeing Wanda Sykes as well as JB Smoove (the actor who plays Leon in Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Chris Rock. Although this movie didn't really make me laugh, it entertained me as I found it thoroughly original.
I didn't know Louis CK could direct, let alone write such a mad script. This movie establishes him among the best African American directors, alongside Spike Lee. (Last viewed: July 2015)

This is a light-hearted movie rather than a comedy meant to make you laugh. As such, it is successful. The movie is set in an independent record store on a day when staff are having multiple crises. It has heart and character, and I enjoyed the story. (Last viewed: July 2015)

To get his mother out of a bind, a young man agrees to babysit her friend's three children. Soon the situation goes from merely bad to being chased by a gang of drug dealers. There was plenty of potential for laughter, but the opportunity was missed. Still, the movie is entertaining enough to watch once if you've got nothing better around. (Last viewed: July 2015)

There are a few laughs in this movie, but the pain you must endure to earn those isn't worth it. I'll admit that I'm highly prejudiced: with rare exceptions, I can't stand movies that deal with movie-making—as though the whole world revolved around Hollywood. The premise of this one is that a desperate director decides to shoot a movie without telling a movie star he will feature in it. Sadly, it's much worse than it sounds. There's lots of screaming, chaos, and terrible music to cover up the images. It might just be bad enough to qualify as a cult movie, but you'd have to ask someone who's interested in such things. This film takes place over the last day at Summer camp in the 1970s. I was glad to discover it as it was probably the funniest Summer camp movie I've seen. The humor is all over the place: some of it slapstick, some of it quite dark, some of it plain crude. The movie happens to feature many faces who became well-known in comedy in the next decade. I can't say that I laughed a lot, but I was entertained and would watch it again ten years from now. In the same theme, you may want to check out Meatballs and Heavyweights. (Last viewed: June 2015)

Renovating a valuable house in view of auctioning it, two brothers are pitted against a formidably clever mouse. Some people rave about this movie, going so far as describing it as "genius". That made me eager to watch it, but I'm sorry to report that I had to force myself to sit through it till the end. Much of the humor had to do with one of the brothers getting hurt in one way or another. I think I had outgrown finding that kind of movie funny around the time I reached ten. During the production of a Broadway play, the lives of a call girl, the director and several characters get entangled to the highest degree. I'm usually not a supporter of Hollywood's habit of making self-referential movies (as though everyone in the world worked in show business); neither do I usually much like movies with a strong theatrical feel. But I found this little movie thoroughly entertaining. It was nice to see Owen Wilson, and everyone else did a fine job too. It wasn't one of those that makes you laugh, but it was funny and it hit the spot. (Last viewed: June 2015)

An American teenage girl travels to the U.K. to finally meet her dad, a prominent politician of royal lineage. Although the film had its entertaining moments—mostly the poking fun at stuck-up people kind—it was a waste of a very decent cast, including Colin Firth and Amanda Bynes, who had shone in She's The Man. Rejected by the vicious president of a beauty farm (err… I mean, sorority), a college freshman joins the dorks and campaigns for student council. Alright, this movie may not have made me laugh, but I sure did grin a lot. Two potheads meet on the side of a road, decide to start a band and constantly have to dodge the fuzz. That's basically the plot. Apparently this is something of a cult among stoner movies. For a cult movie, it's surprisingly watchable. The song Low Rider by War over the credits gets you in the mood. Someone else would have to tell you what the movie is like under the influence of weed. (Last viewed: June 2015)

Convicted of a white-collar crime he didn't commit, a millionaire hires a black man who is desperate for cash to toughen him up before his jail time starts, unaware that his mentor has never seen the inside of a parking infringement envelope, let alone a jail. It's crude, it's often crass, and no single moment really made me laugh, but the original concept and the cast's chemistry were good enough to keep me watching until the end… But if no one's twisting your arm, there are better things to watch. Since childhood, a grown man has been best friends with his teddy bear, who came to life when he made a wish long ago. The incredibly crass teddy bear is now becoming a wedge between the man and his girlfriend. This was a good idea (maybe), and if the idea of a foul-mouthed teddy bear is all you need to stay entertained for the length of a movie, you will love this. I laughed once and smiled a good deal, but overall this formula didn't really work for me. (Last viewed: June 2015)

A talented "loser" coaches a high school tennis team. Despite some occasional crude language the film is not overly crass. It's goofy and made me smile throughout. The reason I watched it in the first place is that it was directed by the same man (his name is Danny Leiner) who also directed Harold and Kumar go to White Castle and Dude, Where's My Car?, a high recommendation in my book. Wrongly accused of having lost his temper on an airplane, a man is ordered to undertake intense training in anger management under the supervision of a therapist who displays several symptoms of lunacy. Despite its numerous shortcomings, the movie made me laugh several times, thanks largely to Jack Nicholson's strong performance. This not Sandler's worst movie; nor (by far) is it his best. But if you're not expecting fireworks, the movie should have enough to keep you entertained. (Last viewed: May 2015)

A loner under pressure to provide a list of groomsmen for his upcoming wedding hires a company which specializes in providing a best man and fake friends. The first half-hour of this sequel (twenty years later) to the original Dumb and Dumber is barely watchable. I persevered because I vaguely remembered that the original also started weakly. This time, our couple of likeable losers embark on a mission to track down a long-lost daughter in the hope she will donate a kidney. The movie does improve slightly after a while, but it does feature the worst performance by Jim Carrey I have ever seen. Don't waste your time: this "comedy" will make you sad. 2014 | New Zealand | Laughs: 6.0 | imdb: 7.7

This mockumentary follows four flatmates who endure the usual tensions associated with sharing space, in addition to tensions peculiar to their condition as immortal vampires. Since my lady friend is allergic to blood on the screen and I hadn't watched a vampire movie since Herzog's Nosferatu, it says a lot for this movie that we watched it till the end. I was drawn to it by the presence of Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords and was delighted to also spot his band manager (Rhys Darby) as a werewolf. The film's premise is quite funny, and although it sometimes seems like the authors were more concerned with pleasing themselves than the audience, the film is a success. I can't say that I laughed but I did smile a lot. With Jemaine Clement, Rhys Darby and others, at the moment New Zealand seems blessed with a solid crew of humorists. (Last viewed: February 2015)

The only reason I came to watch the nth installment of American Pie is that I realized the script had been written by the same duo who gave us Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Well, don't get too excited, these two movies are in very different brackets. After five minutes, we had almost given up on this story of the 13th reunion of a group of high school buddies, and after 35 minutes we decided to pause it for the day. But we came back to it the next day, and I was glad we stuck with it because once you go over a certain threshold, the film does have some good moments. By the same token, I could just as well have skipped it entirely. This is not a roarer, but it will please those who like their movies crass. (Last viewed: February 2015)

Having enjoyed a number of episodes from the Canadian TV series Corner Gas some years ago, I was intrigued to watch the movie. The fact that it aired on television a few days after its theatrical release is no small hint about the film's merits, and indeed we found it mediocre in a number of departments: the plot, to be sure, but that doesn't matter one bit when a movie triggers hard laughter; laughs were not forthcoming. We still enjoyed seeing the familiar faces of these "old friends", but that pleasure was accompanied by a distinct feeling of having moved on. (Last viewed: December 2014)

Strapped for the cash they need to study in comfortable conditions, two promising medical students resort to harvesting kidneys from live patients and selling them to a private clinic. I liked the premise and the cast. Sadly, that's probably all it took for the Australian Film Commission (or whoever was involved) to give the green light, and the final product is one of those two-legged stools that are all too common in Aussie theaters. I was glad to see one of the actors from the terrific TV series Rake, but the movie failed to deliver in the laughs department. (Last viewed: December 2014)

Three young men from England go to Australia on holiday to visit one of their mates, who has promised them that Oz is a paradise for those with promiscuous interests. This movie is easily one of the crudest I've ever watched. And yet, in the midst of all the ear-bendingly foul language, there are a large number of comical situations that make it worth a watch for those with a high profanity threshold. I won't lie to you: just thinking about it, I'm still smiling. (Last viewed: December 2014)

Over the course of a day, several university students wrestle with their respective anxieties over relationships before coming to a temporary resolution. I enjoyed seeing one of the lead actors from the terrific TV series Rake. What else can be said in favor of this movie? The acting is decent; it's cute; it has a terrific title. (For some reason I always thought this was a Hugh Grant movie. If you can explain the connection, please post a comment.) Sadly, this film is also extraordinarily boring and should be viewed only by those who have a personal reason for doing so — for instance if their mom was one of the lead actors. On his tropical honeymoon, an insurance man gets cuckolded by his "perfect bride". Back in New York City, he bumps into a former classmate and falls for her despite her bohemian lifestyle, at odds with his obsession for computing risks. On his honeymoon to Mexico, a man who rushed into marrying his girlfriend after dating her for two months comes to realize what a nightmare she is and becomes drawn to a single woman who is vacationing with her entire family. Comparing it with other Ben Stiller movies, this film is closer to There's Something About Mary than Meet The Parents: it has adult moments that won't appeal to the more prude viewers. As a man becomes astoundingly wealthy thanks to an invention that initially sounded hare-brained, his best friend has a hard time coping with his mounting jealousy. This theme will be familiar to many who scratched their heads in astonishment as they watched acquaintances attain sudden fortune during the dot-com boom years — which ended four years before the movie's release.
