Bill Burr: I'm Sorry You Feel That Way
2014 |
USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh Out Loud) |
imdb: 8.4
When I saw that Bill Burr had a new show out I was really excited to watch it. After they've done a few specials, most stand-up comedians peter out—and who can blame them? Coming up with new material is hard work. But Bill still has it: this show didn't disappoint and left me with a tingly feeling in my laughing spot for many hours after.
Stand-up comedy has a lot to do with being smart, and Bill is one of the brightest guys around. Although he swears a lot, he's not gratuitously filthy and dedicates most of his stage time bravely tackling taboo topics ranging from religion to various of our civilized hypocrisies. Hearing a bit of sanity every once in a while really hits the spot, and I'm grateful to Bill not only for the endorphin rush but also for recharging my philanthropic batteries.

Bill Burr: Let it Go
2010 |
USA | Laughs: 8.4 |
imdb: 8.4
A truly excellent set delivered at a fast pace, which means you get a lot of material over the show's 65 minutes. I really like Bill's style—he's energetic, congenial, bright but humble, direct but not filthy. Every so often he changes his voice and face to act out a character he's conversing with, and it's usually hilarious. There's nothing out of the ordinary in the main themes (children, relationships, aging), but Bill's treatment of them is superb. A+ all the way.

Bill Burr: Why Do I Do This?
2008 |
USA | Laughs: 8.1 |
imdb: 8.4
This set was my first time watching Bill Burr. He made me laugh, and I'll be coming back for more. Apart from his humor, I really liked his energy—he smiles a lot, he moves around, he delivers at a good pace.

Bill Burr: Comedy Central Season 7, Episode 2
2003 |
USA | Laughs: 7.2 |
imdb: 8.0
Discovering this set fourteen years later was a good surprise. A stand-up comedian's powers often decline as they get more settled in life and exhaust their themes, so I was curious to study some ancient material, when Bill was presumably near his peak. This Comedy Central special didn't disappoint. Sometimes old shows age poorly, but most of the material here is of the imperishable kind—universal subjects such as differences between men and women, always a good theme for Bill. Sure there was a short piece about George W. Bush, but I could handle it, I still remember who W is. The only bummer was that the show only lasted twenty minutes. If you can get your hands on this tape, it's a fun short watch.

Bill Burr: You People Are All The Same
2012 |
USA | Laughs: 7.0 |
imdb: 8.3
Bill goes further than other comedians I've seen in exploring imbalances in the male-female equation, and he does a great job of presenting the (or perhaps a) male perspective. This set also has a segment about dogs, which I always like.

I can't say that much stood out from this set — more material about injustice toward males? I enjoyed it. Those who like Bill should find it pretty decent.

Bill Burr: Walk Your Way Out
2017 |
USA | Laughs: 5.8 |
imdb: 7.3
While this show had some laughs and I'd still recommend watching it, the two of us found it much inferior to Bill's previous set,
I'm Sorry You Feel That Way. To start with, for some reason Bill seemed to be yelling for the whole set, which was hard on the ear. That Bill was a bit out of touch with the audience is understandable (the show was taped in Memphis), but some weaker bits seemed to go on for too long. In other words, he seemed to be a tad out of touch with delivery and his own sense of what makes people laugh, critical talents in a stand-up comedian. I hope this is only a rough patch and that Bill bounces back with a spectacular show. At the moment, he seems to need a break from the comedy circuit, and I certainly wish him that—a relaxing sabbatical to recharge his creative juices.

Another entry in the sequence of sets demonstrating Bill's relentless decay. Not too trashy, some good moments. Fast food. Go watch Stewart Lee.
