Safety LastSafety Last

You may not think you want to watch a silent black-and-white movie from 1923, but this classic starring Harold Lloyd may just be the right pill on a gloomy day. The movie is enjoyable throughout, but it really ramps up towards the end: don't miss the last ten minutes. Clean, innocent fun. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Libety Laurel HardyLiberty
      1929 | USA | Laughs: 9.2 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

For me, this short film (all of twenty minutes) is the funniest by Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy by far. Like Harold Lloyd's Safety Last (only six years later), it's humor in high places… and I have a severe fear of heights! One of the few Laurel & Hardy films that doesn't rely on violence for comic effect. Intoxicating: I'm still laughing as I watch this. From reading other reviews, it seems the film has the same effect on others. (Last viewed: July 2010)

The Freshman DVDThe Freshman
      1925 | USA | Laughs: 5.7 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.5

Harold Lloyd wants to be popular in college. Not as funny as Safety Last, but cute and innocent, with two funny scenes: football practice, and the big football game. (Last viewed: September 2009)

Laurel & Hardy Shorts DVDThe Finishing Touch and Other Laurel & Hardy Shorts
      1928 | USA | Laughs: 5.6 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The humor in most Laurel & Hardy shorts rests on Hardy getting poked in the eye, and that doesn't really make me laugh. However, five of these shorts stand above the rest (no pun intended). The first, Liberty, is on my list of funniest comedies ever, and will keep you laughing into your golden years. The four others bear watching once:
The Finishing Touch, where Laurel and Hardy are hired to finish building a house;
Hog Wild, for the scene where Hardy balances at the top of a ladder;
Them Thar Hills, where the pair goes camping in a caravan; and
Tit for Tat, where they open an electrical shop and run into trouble with the neighboring grocer, whom they had already met in Them Thar Hills. (Last viewed: July 2010)

The Kid posterThe Kid
      1921 | USA | Laughs: 2.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 8.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

After finding a baby boy who has been abandoned on the street, Charlie Chaplin's character "the tramp" raises the child, who becomes a partner in his broken glass repair scam.

Although the movie has lost the power to make me laugh (if it ever had it), I found it endearing and worth a watch as a cultural artifact. (Last viewed: Dec 1976 July 2018)

Our Hospitality DVDOur Hospitality
      1923 | USA | Laughs: 1.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A young man travels to a faraway town where he has inherited an estate. But he is the target of a century-old family feud, and he is soon hunted by the father and brothers of the young lady he has befriended on the train. Although this film won't make 21st century viewers laugh, it is surprisingly easy to watch, partly for its scenery and historical interest, partly because of its cute plot and descent pace. If you've got an hour to kill, don't let the age scare you. (Last viewed: June 2013)

Two lovers who live across from each other must work around their abusive parents. Someone who saw this 17-minute film in a theater with a live pianist recommended it to me. When I watched it on my own, it entertained me, but it didn't make me laugh. You probably have to be in the mood. (Last viewed: June 2014)
