Get Smart DVDGet Smart
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 8.8 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.5
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Spoof spy movie featuring Steve Carell, the boss in the US version of The Office. Much of the humor draws from the spies exposing their everyday human side. Good laughs! Only reproach: it's a bit of a work-out for the eyes—I didn't need all the special effects. (Last viewed: September 2010)

wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A reporter goes undercover to break a story about drug dealing on the beach. To do so, he pretends to agree to kill a rich man who says he is dying of cancer, and he adopts a series of disguises and personas, each more successful than the last. A home run role for Chevy Chase. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Beverly Hills Cop DVDBeverly Hills Cop
      1984 | USA | Laughs: 8.7 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.3
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Despite a brutal murder scene and lots of shootings, this movie packs lots of laughters. A Detroit cop (Eddie Murphy) elopes to Los Angeles to investigate the murder of a childhood friend. There, he must play a cat-and-mouse game with the local police. Bonus: It's 1984, and the clothing styles and theme music are just wonderful. Don't bother watching the sequel. Office Space DVDOffice Space
      1999 | USA | Laughs: 8.6 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Life in a cubicle… the movie. Perhaps it inspired The Office, the UK TV series that spawned a US series by the same name. Very funny during the scene-setting phase. Once the movie acquires a plot, it loses steam on the laughs. For my taste, they could have made the entire movie without a plot—it would only have enhanced the study of pointlessness. What about Bob DVDWhat about Bob
      1991 | USA | Laughs: 8.6 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A clingy new patient stalks his psychiatrist all the way to the doctor's lakeside holiday home. The family loves Bob, but the doctor wants him gone. Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray are excellent opposite each other. I love this movie—it has me grinning from beginning to end. Side-note: Bill Murray gets to practice his Heimlich Maneuver as in Groundhog Day, but not as expertly. (Last viewed: Nov 2008 October 2012)

Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery DVDAustin Powers, International Man of Mystery
      1997 | USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Frozen in 1967, A British spy and his nemesis meet again in 1997. Not really funny, but really really fun, with one or two LOL moments. This movie is so incredibly fresh and original. Whoever is responsible for it (his name is Mike Myers) is a creative genius. (Last viewed: Jun 1997 August 2009)

Borat DVDBorat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
      2006 | USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Warning: this movie is sometimes extremely graphic and often very vulgar. I didn't want to watch it again because I remembered how vulgar it often is. So it almost pains me to say that despite all this, Borat is a very funny movie. You laugh, but the movie leaves you feeling dirty. A television reporter from Kazakhstan is sent to New York to report on America. Soon, he decides to travel cross-country in order to marry Pamela Anderson. From the way he moves to the way he speaks, Sasha Baron Cohen is simply brilliant in this role. And yet, you hate him a little bit for the crass material he subjects you to. Keep children away when you are watching. (Last viewed: Oct 2008 October 2012)

Waiting DVDWaiting
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A day with the crew of a Shenanigan's restaurant. This movie has a fair amount of gross-out humor as well as body-parts jokes—usually not my favorite—so I was surprised at how much I laughed. For one thing, the interactions between staff and customers are very funny. I am also finding that comedies with Ryan Reynolds tend to work for me. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Meet Dave DVDMeet Dave
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 5.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

An alien space ship lands in New York—an inconspicuous ship sized and shaped like a human being, and staffed by a crew of eraser-size humanoids who make "Dave" (as the ship is soon named) interact with the locals as though Dave were human. I don't know why this film has such a low IMDB rating. Neither vulgar nor loud, it was the best I'd seen from Eddie Murphy in years, and it had me laughing on multiple occasions. Don't miss it! Meet the Fockers DVDMeet the Fockers
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 8.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The movie made me laugh as much as Meet the Parents, perhaps more. Seen from the viewpoint of this page (movies that make you laugh), it is therefore as good as the original, a rare feat for a sequel. However, it must be said that overall, it is not as good a movie. Meet the Parents has a story that you'll never forget. Meet Fockers makes you laugh, but it doesn't have a story apart from the simple set-up: Greg, his fiancée and her parents travel down to Florida to meet Greg's parents. In the original movie, the discomfort Greg felt as he tried to please Jack was potent and contagious. In the sequel, the discomfort is second-hand as Greg worries about his parents' conduct with Jack. You also don't have the joy or discovering Jack's character (Robert De Niro) for the first time—in fact they've made Jack less human. On the other hand, the movie has other treats in store: Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand, who play Greg's parents. Forget the sequel, Little Fockers. (Last viewed: August 2010)

Coneheads DVDConeheads
      1993 | USA | Laughs: 8.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 5.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A couple of aliens with pointy heads crash their space craft somewhere in America. As they await the rescue ship scheduled to pick them up after 18 years, they adapt to their new home. The poster may not inspire you to watch this film, but you have to ask yourself if you want to look smart tonight or if you want to laugh. The aliens are sometimes hard to understand, but what you do understand is funny. I enjoyed the guest appearances of comedy greats such as Adam Sandler and Seinfeld's Kramer and George. One of those low-rated movies that can really pull the laughs. (Last viewed: January 2012)

Big Stan DVDBig Stan
      2007 | USA | Laughs: 8.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Convicted of fraud, a wealthy scammer trains in the martial arts to prepare for his time in jail, where he becomes "Big Stan". If you can tolerate a moderate dose of adult themes, this movie will be a welcome surprise, not least because it reinvents the dynamics of situations often seen in movies, such as life in prison. The cast is excellent. The lead actor (Rob Schneider), who directed the movie, comes highly recommended via 50 First Dates, where he was the brilliant Ula. (Last viewed: June 2012)

Rushmore DVDRushmore
      1998 | USA | Laughs: 8.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

An incredibly enterprising 15-year-old has carved a parallel universe for himself at the prestigious private school he attends. When he befriends a female teacher with a British accent and a successful entrepreneur (an older version of himself?), Max's universe soon turns on its head. They had to turn Bill Murray about three quarters of the way down to make room for our young hero, and it's somehow delicious to take Bill one sip at a time. I was surprised at how much I laughed the second time I saw Rushmore. Beyond the laughs, I just love the story, the directing, the photography, the atmosphere. The sweetness of the characters somehow reminds me of another school-years movie, Ferris Bueller. (Last viewed: December 2011)

Spinal Tap DVDThis is Spinal Tap
      1984 | USA | Laughs: 8.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

This movie that defined the mockumentary genre pretends to follow British band Spinal Tap as it tours the United States to launch its latest album. The two lead band members feel so real you keep grinning from start to finish. A few things go wrong. You may surprise yourself being fascinated as though you were watching a doco about the Beatles or David Bowie, whose music Spinal Tap's resembles in some of its periods. The Spy Who Shagged Me DVDThe Spy who Shagged Me
      1999 | USA | Laughs: 8.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.6
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The first Austin Powers sequel. The jokes are starting to head in the direction of the bathroom, but still very funny. One wishes there weren't so many barely disguised ads in this movie. By the way, don't bother watching Goldmember, the third instalment in the series. (Last viewed: September 2009)
