To smuggle cannabis from Mexico into the United States, posing as the prototypical middle-class straight white American family, an unlikely quartet cross the border in a luxurious recreational vehicle. I found this movie very funny. The only reason I didn't love it is that Jennifer Aniston gives me acne, and I wished she had been replaced by any one of the thousands of actresses capable of playing the part—Tina Fey for instance. You might not have the same skin condition. Either way, the movie is one of the best comedies of the 2013 and well worth watching. Jason Sudeikis did a great job as the lead male character, and it was a treat to see Nick Offerman, who plays Ron Swanson in Parks and Recreation.

EDIT: nine years later, the movie still entertains me but not nearly to the extent that it did on first viewing. On the other hand, this time I was chuffed to see so much of Jason Sudeikis, who since then has won the world over for his interpretation of Ted Lasso. (Season 1, I mean. In my book, season 2 is a sad joke, the character's lines are a caricature with those of the first season.)

A young woman on the rebound falls in love with a serial killer. Despite the threadbare script, the film has some very funny moments. We weren't sad we watched it. (Last viewed: May 2016)

Booksmart posterBooksmart
      2019 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Chuckle) | imdb: 7.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A pair of high-achieving female high-school students decide to break their self-imposed rules the day before graduation in order to experience the fun they've been missing out on.

The movie had a hard time finding its pace, but once it did there was no stopping it. I can't say that it made me laugh out loud, but I found myself smiling and chuckling for the main part of it.

Perhaps I don't watch enough contemporary movies, but it was unusual for me seeing two young female characters who were funny and smart, and I enjoyed that. I also liked that although at some stage two young ladies acted out on their mutual attraction, they were not objectified.

As a much older person, for me this was also something of a documentary about a generation I know little about. I found it surprisingly good, and even though it's by no means the peak of comedy, I warmly recommend it for its other virtues.

Don Jon posterDon Jon
      2013 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is not a laugh-out-loud comedy, but it might make you smirk most of the way, and regardless of its comical merits it's a good film. It deals with below-the-belt physical impulses from the standpoint of a young male at his peak, and with the different motivations that drive young adults of either gender when they consider relationships.

In the movies, references to pornography tend to be used as excuses for easy laughs. This was the first time I saw the topic treated in a lucid manner. From seeing tepid reviews by young adults, I am given to think that this might be a movie you enjoy more once you've gained some distance to the age group concerned.

The movie is not perfect—as a "solution" to the mirage of pornography, it seems to offer another mirage: to lose oneself in another person. That particular delusion would make a good topic for another comedy, perhaps when the director has gained some distance from the age group most under its spell. Altogether, a surprisingly solid watch. (Last viewed: December 2013)

School of Rock posterSchool of Rock
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.1
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A destitute musician impersonates his roommate to get hired as a school teacher at a prep school, where he undertakes to instruct his class in Rock'n Roll.

The premise reminded me of Fck You Goethe (which this movie predates by ten years). Although there were no hard laughs, the movie was consistently funny, thanks both to the kids and to Jack Black, who saved no energy putting on this impressive performance. A fun watch. (Last viewed: November 2016)

21 Jump Street DVD21 Jump Street
      2012 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Two young cops are sent undercover to a high school to infiltrate a drug ring. Things have changed in the seven years since they graduated high school—the nerd becomes the cool guy, and the cool guy becomes the geek. This is not a laugh-out-loud movie, but it is funny enough to watch once, and it earns points for several original scenes, such as a car chase with a driving school's learner car, where trucks full of gas refuse to explode. I would watch the sequel. (Last viewed: October 2012)

The Campaign DVDThe Campaign

      wikipedia | who was involved?

Two men from North Carolina fight a merciless battle for the State election. Despite some occasional crassness, the movie has a few laughs and the actors do a very good job. Sadly, this is an area where reality exceeds fiction: real elections are funnier. (Last viewed: November 2012)

Why Him? posterWhy Him?
      2016 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Flying to California to spend Christmas with their daughter who is studying at Stanford, a prim couple (and their teenage son) discover that their daughter (and sister) is living with a foul-mouthed video game millionaire. The theme is a welcome echo to the now classic Meet the Parents, and although the laughs are not as forthcoming, the movie is funny and probably memorable. As long as you don't expect to crack a rib laughing, you probably won't be disappointed popping this in for a bit of mindless Sunday night entertainment. (Last viewed: June 2017)

A young couple is in love with lifestyle moves they have recently made, such as having a baby and buying a house. When a fraternity moves in next door, the bubble pops and war ensues.

Given the theme, there were far fewer crass moments than could be expected. Although this is by no means a great comedy, it had some very funny moments and I found it entertaining enough to deserve a watch. (Last viewed: September 2014)

Envy posterEnvy
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 4.8
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

As a man becomes astoundingly wealthy thanks to an invention that initially sounded hare-brained, his best friend has a hard time coping with his mounting jealousy. This theme will be familiar to many who scratched their heads in astonishment as they watched acquaintances attain sudden fortune during the dot-com boom years — which ended four years before the movie's release. Despite its poor ratings, I found it funny and enjoyed the performances by Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Amy Poehler. (Last viewed: October 2014)

American Reunion posterAmerican Reunion
      2012 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The only reason I came to watch the nth installment of American Pie is that I realized the script had been written by the same duo who gave us Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Well, don't get too excited, these two movies are in very different brackets. After five minutes, we had almost given up on this story of the 13th reunion of a group of high school buddies, and after 35 minutes we decided to pause it for the day. But we came back to it the next day, and I was glad we stuck with it because once you go over a certain threshold, the film does have some good moments. By the same token, I could just as well have skipped it entirely. This is not a roarer, but it will please those who like their movies crass. (Last viewed: February 2015)

Super Troopers 2 posterSuper Troopers 2
      2018 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is one of those rare comedy movies that gets better the longer you stick with it (for the first hour anyhow). The opening scene was so bad that I nearly quit there and then. I'm glad I didn't.

Don't get me wrong: the movie is bad. But it's bad in the right ways, which is to say that in the middle of all the nonsense there are some very funny moments. The Danny DeVito joke was the best comedy-movie-laugh I had this year. But the last half-hour or so is a waste of time.

The plot? The transition of a strip of land along Vermont's northern border from Canadian to US sovereignty, and the resulting confrontation between equally inept US and Canadian cops.

This made me want to go watch the original Super Troopers again. I had rated it highly, so I expected the original to be way funnier. As it turns out, the sequel was superior, at least for me. (Last viewed: August 2018)

The Proposal DVDThe Proposal
      2009 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A Canadian national blackmails her executive assistant into marrying her so she can keep her New York job. When she travels to Alaska to meet her fiancé's family, she discovers that he isn't quite the "poor boy" she had pegged him as. I find Ryan Reynolds consistently funny, and the first half of the movie made me laugh a few times. It struck a few pleasant familiar chords—such as Meet the Parents and Green Card. Sadly, just as at it crosses the halfway mark, the movie abandons the comedy genre and powers on as a pure romance. This will make it a great watch if you love chick flicks, but in the world of laughs, the movie loses many points, though it's still worth a watch. (Last viewed: January 2013)

Keeping the Faith DVDKeeping the Faith
      2000 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.3
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Two best friends (a rabbi and a priest) are reunited with a girl who was their other best friend when they were eight. Only now they both fall in love with her. As romantic comedies go, this one isn't too sappy, perhaps because it's got more than one track. I like it when Ben Stiller isn't playing a freak. This is one of his better roles. In large part thanks to him, the movie has many funny moments. The rest of the cast performs well too, and it's an enjoyable watch. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Rush Hour DVDRush Hour
      1998 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A Hong Kong detective and a LAPD cop must rescue the daughter of a foreign dignitary. The line between action and comedy is a worthy one to walk, as laughter periodically releases the dramatic tension (a fine example is Beverly Hills Cop). But no great magic happens in this film. I am a bit biased because I have sensitive ears and Chris Tucker's high-pitched voice grates me (I just realized that he was also in Friday and had the same effect on me there). Yet does make me smile, and the two actors definitely manage to produce some good chuckles. If you feel like scraping the bottom of the "watch once" category and you like fight scenes, then this is for you. (Last viewed: September 2012)
