I became a moderate fan of the actor Javier Gutiérrez while watching the science fiction thriller series Estoy Vivo. He stars again in this comedy series, and although his acting range doesn't seem all that wide after all, he is perfect for this particular role.

The series should please fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm: the main character is someone who somehow seems to be missing the sense for a certain line beyond which most people would feel ashamed. As a result, the rest of us cringe on his behalf, as we did with Larry.

Season 1 is the only one I've seen so far. In my view, the season stops at episode 6. Episode 7 is weak, and everything after that loses the initial oomph.

As an advanced student of Spanish, I thought the level was perfect without subtitles—I was gratified by the fact that I could understand most of it, while still being challenged by some parts.

Highly recommended. (Last viewed: April 2018)

Flaman posterFlaman
      2013 | Spain | Laughs: 3.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.4
      who was involved?

Flaman is a regular guy from a lower class background (if you'll allow me lower class instead of working class here) who gets adopted by a group of nerds who discover that he possesses a number of superpowers.

This is a series I've thoroughly enjoyed even though I understand very little of it—in fact, because I understand so little. One of my tutors (who is from Madrid) assures me that an average Spaniard would not understand half of the dialogue. And that's part of the charm: the accent of Flaman and his close ones is an exaggeratedly thick Andalusian, which contrasts sharply with the clear enunciation of his nerd friends.

Apart from that, the plot and execution are delightfully campy. I don't think you can go wrong watching the first episode (they are short and available on YouTube) before deciding where to go from there.

A worthy piece of counterculture. (Last viewed: April 2018)

Aquí no hay quien viva posterAquí no hay quien viva

So far I've only watched a single episode, but this series strikes me as a bearable version of the loud series La que se avecina. Both series document the lives of the inhabitants of an apartment building. This one predates the other, and, from what I can tell so far, relies less on loud antics and gross characterization.

The second series was created as a continuation to the first after the production company was acquired, so you will recognize some of the cast.

I'm encouraged to watch some more. (Last viewed: April 2018)

I became aware of the comedian Berto Romero while listening to Nadie Sabe Nada, one of my favorite podcasts, in which he shares the limelight with Andreu Buenafuente.

In this series, he plays himself as he goes through the experience of being a father for the first time. After the first episode, I'm intrigued enough to want to watch some more. (Last viewed: April 2018)

A Spanish classic.

I've tried several times, but so far I'm not biting. Partly this has to do with the fact that much of the dialogue is lost on me. But the main cause is the theatrical style of the series (at least in Season 1). This leads to a lot of noise and commotion that I simply don't enjoy. Also, even though I expect the characters of a TV comedy to be somewhat caricatural, the caricature is way too thick for my taste. This may not be a problem for those who enjoy a similar style of French or British comedy.

To me, so far, Aquí no hay quien viva seems superior. Not to sound snobbish, but it's the original version of the series (sporting some of the same cast) before the production company was acquired.

I've heard that Seasons 3 and 4 are less theatrical, and am planning to give those a go one of these days. (Last viewed: April 2018)
