Eddie Izzard: Glorious
1997 |
U.K. | Laughs: 9.1 |
imdb: 8.4
wikipedia
Show featuring Eddie in a gorgeous red lame outfit. Meanders through a hundred topics from Noah sawing wood for the Ark to Queen Elizabeth reacting to Diana's death. When I woke up the next morning, my stomach muscles still felt the previous night's laughter.

Eddie Izzard: Circle

Great show. Eddie wears a shiny black outfit. More chuckles than laughs, but I particularly enjoyed the bits about monkeys interacting with humans, about Jesus amidst dinosaurs, and about Darth Vader in the Death Star's canteen.

Eddie Izzard: Unrepeatable
1994 |
U.K. | Laughs: 4.0 (Don't Bother) |
imdb: 8.0
wikipedia
Belongs in the "don't bother watching" section. The show is called
Unrepeatable, and indeed in my case there was little risk of it being repeated, because I couldn't catch much. Partly, it's the acoustics of the grand old London theater where this was shot and the fact that Izzard keeps the mike right in front of his face. Also, Eddie speaks with a more pronounced English accent than in his later shows. Eddie also speaks a lot faster than usual, without the pauses that he later learned to use for comic effect. For me, this show falls in the genre of "English comedy", which I perceive as voices that go annoyingly up and down, speaking lots and lots of words that don't really make me laugh. The interminable piece on Star Trek ranked with the most boring stand-up comedy I've ever seen. I don't watch television, and I certainly don't want to watch stand-up comedy about TV shows. On the other hand, I did enjoy the segment on cats and dogs, as well as the one on horror movies.

Ralphie May: Austin-Tatious
2008 |
USA | Laughs: 7.0 (Watch Once) |
imdb: 6.7
Stand-up comedy show recorded in Texas. I watched this by mistake while looking for material by an Australian comedian who, I was told, went by the stage name "Austin Tatious" (I later learned it was spelled Austen Tayshus). I usually don't like comedians who spend most of their time below the belt, but Ralphie really made me laugh. Coarse language and adult themes.

Carl Barron: Carl Barron LIVE
2003 |
Australia | Laughs: 6.1 (Watch Once) |
imdb: 7.8
Despite the usual obsession of stand-up comedians with body functions, some good laughs can be found in this performance recorded in Bathhurst, Australia. My favorite bits were those about growing up in an Australian family. I like that Carl Barron is not nasty (no cheap shots at gays, ethnic groups etc). Neither does he build his entire trade on sex. Only for those who can wrap their ears around an Austrayan accent.

Starts in the gutter, stays in the gutter, but dog-gum… it's funny, and you can't help laughing even if you cringe.
