Bill Bailey: Dandelion Mind posterBill Bailey: Dandelion Mind
      2010 | U.K. | Laughs: 6.5 | imdb: 7.6
      who was involved?

This show is not Bill's best but it has its good moments. To nitpick: one bit involving the public is particularly repetitive; there are many musical numbers, not all of which are inspired; there are many references to celebrities, which makes the show less universal, and prone to faster to aging. Anthony Jeselnik: Fire in the Maternity Ward posterAnthony Jeselnik: Fire in the Maternity Ward
      2019 | USA | Laughs: 6.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.2
      who was involved?

This set was a pleasant surprise. It was the first time I saw Anthony. His brand of humor relies on saying things which are unexpectedly 'offensive' but not overly crass. This brings him closer to Ricky Gervais than to Jim Jefferies. The comparison can be extended in that unlike Jim, at no point does Anthony say anything that makes you laugh by being an unpopular opinion that you also happen to hold.

One distinctive feature of the show is that Anthony spends more time than customary reflecting on his own material, but not with the incisive insight of the master of this meta-comedy genre, Stewart Lee.

The set's pacing is incredibly slow, which means that in an hour you get about twenty minutes' worth of material. On the other hand, that gives you time to enjoy the jokes, so I wasn't complaining. The last quarter of the show was weaker than the rest.

Overall, this was a good experience: I'll be looking for Anthony's earlier material. (Last viewed: May 2019)

Louis CK - Oh My God posterLouis CK: Oh My God
      2013 | USA | Laughs: 6.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 8.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Over the years, Louis CK has been feeding his shows from two different taps—the smart tap and the trashy tap. For this special, thankfully, he doesn't have the trashy tap all the way open, which makes it easier to watch than his Beacon Theatre special.

For laughs, the show starts at its peak. Then there is a very long lull. Then the show picks up again and Louis ends strong.

Overall, a very enjoyable hour. (Last viewed: September 2016)

Joe Lycett: Thats The Way, A-Ha, A-Ha posterJoe Lycett: Thats The Way, A-Ha, A-Ha
      2016 | U.K. | Laughs: 6.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.7
      who was involved?

Since this is a long set and we often find long sets hard to watch in one sitting, we sat down with the intention of watching half of it before going out—but ended up watching all 75 minutes of it, our first viewing of a show by Joe Lycett. We laughed a few times and smiled a lot: we were entertained. Joe has a very clever, likeable delivery that is his very own. Often when watching a stand-up who is new to me, he or she naturally evokes other comedians, but in Joe's none came to mind. The weaker points (and they shouldn't discourage you from watching) were that Joe sometimes referred to people we didn't know (lacking the English background), and that the time when he read jokes sent to his phone on social media went a bit long. But the device of relating electronic exchanges he's had worked. I'm glad to have discovered a "new" stand-up comedian I enjoy and will be looking for his next show. (Last viewed: June 2017)

Tom Segura: Mostly Stories posterTom Segura: Mostly Stories
      2016 | USA | Laughs: 6.5 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.6
      who was involved?

This show, my introduction to Tom Segura, made me laugh some and smile lots. I felt that Tom adds something to what his contemporaries (Bill Burr, Louis CK, Jim Jefferies…) are already doing, and that's not a feeling I get every day.

The material isn't extraordinarily sophisticated, but half the show is watching Tom's face: he is very expressive. He also makes great voices. Overall he comes across as very confident…perhaps too much so, as with confidence comes a slower pace, and some of the bits felt a tad drawn out. For my taste Tom could also have less time below the belt, but we all know that's not going to happen.

I'm looking forward to watching more by this talented stand-up pro. (Last viewed: May 2017)

Louis C.K.: HilariousLouis C.K.: Hilarious
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 6.5 | imdb: 8.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Louis got a divorce since his previous recording (Chewed-Up). Although I'm thrilled for him, I'm sad to lose the funny material about his interaction with his spouse. As the previous one, this show doesn't have a lot of laughter-triggering material, but I didn't mind because I enjoyed listening to Louis's bright mind at work. The first part is probably the funniest. It's also the dirtiest. I really didn't need to hear another twenty minutes of Louis on the general theme of men pleasuring themselves. I can't say that much stood out from this set — more material about injustice toward males? I enjoyed it. Those who like Bill should find it pretty decent.

Bill Cosby: Far from Finished posterBill Cosby: Far from Finished
      2013 | USA | Laughs: 6.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.8
      who was involved?

Maybe I was tired, but for me the first 30 minutes of this show was a bit of a yawner. When I picked it up the next day, Bill made me laugh, and apart from a few long moments, it was a delight until the end. The main themes (the wife, kids) will be well familiar to those who have seen Bill's other sets. (Last viewed: June 2015)

Bill Burr: Walk Your Way Out posterBill Burr: Walk Your Way Out
      2017 | USA | Laughs: 5.8 | imdb: 7.3
      who was involved?

While this show had some laughs and I'd still recommend watching it, the two of us found it much inferior to Bill's previous set, I'm Sorry You Feel That Way. To start with, for some reason Bill seemed to be yelling for the whole set, which was hard on the ear. That Bill was a bit out of touch with the audience is understandable (the show was taped in Memphis), but some weaker bits seemed to go on for too long. In other words, he seemed to be a tad out of touch with delivery and his own sense of what makes people laugh, critical talents in a stand-up comedian. I hope this is only a rough patch and that Bill bounces back with a spectacular show. At the moment, he seems to need a break from the comedy circuit, and I certainly wish him that—a relaxing sabbatical to recharge his creative juices. (Last viewed: June 2017)

Dara O Briain: Craic Dealer posterDara O Briain: Craic Dealer
      2012 | U.K. | Laughs: 5.5 | imdb: 7.7
      who was involved?

This tape felt like the fast-food of Dara O'Briain stand-up sets: high in fat and low on nutritional value. Much of the show feels less like watching stand-up than like watching an MC amping up the crowd about the main act that's about to come on stage. Sadly, the main act never shows. Yes, there are good moments, but far too much filler in between. Perhaps that is digestible in a land where sandwiches contain half an inch of butter (my memories of England), but I doubt this formula would work overseas. The last quarter of the show is probably the strongest.

ps: Yes, I know the show was taped in Scotland. You can put down that world map. (Last viewed: December 2013)

Anthony Jeselnik: Thoughts and Prayers posterAnthony Jeselnik: Thoughts and Prayers
      2015 | USA | Laughs: 5.5 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.8
      who was involved?

I watched this after the day after seeing Anthony for the first time (in his 2019 show Fire in the Maternity Ward) and was surprised to find it considerably weaker, which is good news as far as things to come.

The set may be uneven, but if you're an amateur of stand-up I'd still recommend you watch it as it contains a few really strong bits, including one of the best gun jokes I've heard.

Anthony's taboo topics (such as kids getting hurt) don't bother me, it's just that his craft is less polished on this show than on the next — from themes to writing to delivery. Some of the jokes are even objectively lame, such as the one relying on word play on the word deer or the one about an uncle at NASA.

But despite this and the fairly boring second part, this is still a far more worthwhile hour than all of the filth that passes as comedy these days.

Looking forward to seeing some of Anthony's future work. (Last viewed: May 2019)

Louis C.K.: Live at the Beacon TheaterLouis C.K.: Live at the Beacon Theater
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 5.4 | imdb: 8.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This show has some good segments, but you can easily skip it if you've seen other sets by Louis. I, for one, have lost any interest for his obsession with self-pleasuring and other below-the-belt activities. But that must be what sells best. (Last viewed: January 2013)

Bill Bailey: Qualmpeddler posterBill Bailey: Qualmpeddler
      2013 | U.K. | Laughs: 5.1 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.5
      who was involved?

In the first part of the set, Bill makes many references to public figures—a comedic device I rarely like, as it makes the material instantly dated as well as culture-dependent. How many U.S. viewers keep up with U.K. politics and social affairs?

But it's a long set, and it has some very good bits. Overall it felt like watching "real Bill Bailey" (as opposed to a weaker, diluted version of his former self), and I enjoyed the experience. (Last viewed: June 2017)

Ronny Chieng: Asian Comedian Destroys America posterRonny Chieng: Asian Comedian Destroys America
      2019 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 | imdb: 7.4
      who was involved?

This tape was my first exposure to Ronny as a stand-up comedian, and I was pleasantly surprised: it seemed to me that Ronny brings something new in his role of recent migrant to America. Of course other comedians have made that move stateside and commented on U.S. culture from that newcomer perspective (Jim Jefferies comes to mind) but I particularly enjoyed the Asian or even specifically Chinese spin that Ronny Chieng (Malaysian-born) brings to his commentary.

My favorite bit was the one about how Asians should be let loose to run the U.S. government.

With all this said, I didn't have any hard laughs. I just enjoyed the show and got the impression that Ronny might have more potential to unleash as he refines his craft.

Mark Normand: Don't Be Yourself posterMark Normand: Don't Be Yourself
      2017 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 | imdb: 5.5
      who was involved?

I watched this set after discovering Mark in his 2020 set, Out To Lunch, which I enjoyed and made me curious about his earlier work.

While this set is also enjoyable, it is not equally so, giving me the impression is that Mark has refined his act since then. This might be good news for things to come. That being said, the new show, though more polished, does rehash much of the same material, which might also suggest that there isn't a whole lot more where that came from.
