Ode to Joy posterOde to Joy
      2019 | USA | Laughs: 3.0 (Chuckle) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Prone to fainting when he experiences strong emotions, a man has managed to keep amorous relationship at bay from his life — until a woman decides they should go out.

Although on a comedy level the movie is rather bland, it's by no means hard to watch and will probably make you smile just enough to keep you awake if you have nothing better on your list for the evening.

Buffaloed posterBuffaloed
      2019 | USA | Laughs: 3.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A young lady tries to be the biggest scammer among the scammers. It was probably well-intentioned, but the main protagonist's shrill voice and acting didn't convince me, although I did manage to crack a few smiles and leave the tape on until the end.

Toni Erdmann posterToni Erdmann
      2016 | Germany | Laughs: 3.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Hoping to reconnect with his daughter—a strung-up consultant—a man poses as a life coach in order to intrude into her work environment. This sweet, intimate movie is not a 'slap-your-thighs' kind of comedy, but it's insidiously funny and we had no trouble sitting through the whole thing (two hours and forty minutes) in a single sitting. A recommended watch if you're not desperate for hard laughs. (Last viewed: September 2017)

On his hundredth birthday, an man slips out of his retirement home and attracts the wrath of a with a criminal gang. No hard laughs for us, but this was a sweet movie that had us smiling throughout. (Last viewed: August 2017)

Populaire posterPopulaire
      2012 | France | Laughs: 3.0 | imdb: 6.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

In the late 1950s, a business man trains his secretary to win the regional speed-typing championship. I'm not always fond of period movies, but somehow this one really pulls it off. This is not the kind of movie that's designed to make you laugh, but it's a fun romantic comedy with plenty of smiles. I liked it. (Last viewed: August 2014)

Paddington posterPaddington
      2014 | U.K. | Laughs: 3.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Forced to emigrate to London, a young bear looks for a family to call home while a museum curator schemes to have him stuffed. This cute movie made me chuckle a few times. Perfect if you're in the mood for the undemanding atmosphere of a movie aimed principally at children yet not too dumb to be unbearable for adults.

My source in the world of children entertainment tells me that the sequel is the funnier of the two movies.

Cedar Rapids DVDCedar Rapids
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 3.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A naive insurance salesman who has never left his hometown finds himself having to swim with the sharks at a conference in the big smoke—Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This movie is more of a light-hearted take on middle-class working life in middle America than a "proper comedy" in the laugh-out-loud sense. It did not really make us laugh, but we enjoyed it. Corner Gas: The Movie posterCorner Gas: The Movie
      2014 | Canada | Laughs: 3.0 | imdb: 6.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Having enjoyed a number of episodes from the Canadian TV series Corner Gas some years ago, I was intrigued to watch the movie. The fact that it aired on television a few days after its theatrical release is no small hint about the film's merits, and indeed we found it mediocre in a number of departments: the plot, to be sure, but that doesn't matter one bit when a movie triggers hard laughter; laughs were not forthcoming. We still enjoyed seeing the familiar faces of these "old friends", but that pleasure was accompanied by a distinct feeling of having moved on. (Last viewed: December 2014)

Ted posterTed
      2012 | USA | Laughs: 3.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Since childhood, a grown man has been best friends with his teddy bear, who came to life when he made a wish long ago. The incredibly crass teddy bear is now becoming a wedge between the man and his girlfriend. This was a good idea (maybe), and if the idea of a foul-mouthed teddy bear is all you need to stay entertained for the length of a movie, you will love this. I laughed once and smiled a good deal, but overall this formula didn't really work for me. (Last viewed: June 2015)

Between Two Ferns: The Movie posterBetween Two Ferns: The Movie
      2019 | USA | Laughs: 2.8 (Chuckle) | imdb: 6.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This mockumentary purports to document a road trip undertaken by Zack Galifianakis and his crew to save his TV show, whose trademark is the obnoxious manner in which he interviews celebrities. Nothing to write home about, but made me smile.

Denied the presidency of a catholic brotherhood for which she works harder than any other member, a woman attempts to reclaim what is rightly hers.

A charming little movie.

Sorry to Bother You posterSorry to Bother You

      wikipedia | who was involved?

An African American becomes a star telemarketer by putting on a "white voice". When he gets promoted he must choose between his teammates and his need for cash.

The first half was very original and funny, although not in a laugh-out-loud kind of way. One of the more interesting movies of the year. (Last viewed: October 2018)

      2010 | USA | Laughs: 2.7 (Just Awful) | imdb: 5.5

With this third instalment, Meet the Parents reaches the unavoidable fate of an excellent movie whose success the studios try to stretch over multiple sequels. A few laughs, but a waste of perfectly good characters. (Last viewed: May 2011)

Grown Ups DVDGrown Ups

I like Adam Sandler, but this movie is an exercise in self-indulgence—and utter garbage. We're usually pretty generous about watching movies that don't start well (some take a while to develop) but we found this one unwatchable and stopped after 26 minutes. It felt like watching four friends hanging out and cracking mediocre jokes. I'm sure you can find three people to do that with (and actually laugh in the process): you don't need Adam Sandler and his buddies. (Last viewed: April 2012)

Il a déjà tes yeux poster He Even Has Your EyesHe Even Has Your Eyes (Il a déjà tes yeux)
      2016 | France | Laughs: 2.6 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A French couple of African origins adopt a white child. Comedy-wise, there are a few good moments thanks in large part to the offbeat family friend, but too much of the smiling you'll do while watching this movie relies on the cheap trick of harnessing the natural tendency most of us have to mirror the wide smiles we see on the faces of attractive people. Plot-wise, the movie is not only predictable (predictably so, of course), but it's ending is sickly-sweet. Interesting, but that horrible ending left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Please go manipulate someone else with that nonsensical fable in which France is an accepting multi-cultural country where at bottom everyone is decent and everything has to end well.
