The Campaign DVDThe Campaign
      2012 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Two men from North Carolina fight a merciless battle for the State election. Despite some occasional crassness, the movie has a few laughs and the actors do a very good job. Sadly, this is an area where reality exceeds fiction: real elections are funnier. (Last viewed: November 2012)

Why Him? posterWhy Him?
      2016 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Flying to California to spend Christmas with their daughter who is studying at Stanford, a prim couple (and their teenage son) discover that their daughter (and sister) is living with a foul-mouthed video game millionaire. The theme is a welcome echo to the now classic Meet the Parents, and although the laughs are not as forthcoming, the movie is funny and probably memorable. As long as you don't expect to crack a rib laughing, you probably won't be disappointed popping this in for a bit of mindless Sunday night entertainment. (Last viewed: June 2017)

Sole a catinelle posterSun in Buckets (Sole a catinelle)
      2013 | Italy | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A nearly-bankrupt door-to-door salesman who has promised to take his son on a vacation gets "adopted" by a wealthy crowd where his rough manners work wonders. Not much will surprise you in this classic fish-out-of-water scenario. I laughed a couple of times, but the script isn't nearly as tight or pleasant as in Checco's two subsequent movies, Que Bella Giornata and Quo Vado. (Last viewed: August 2017)

Le Sens de l'Humour posterA Sense of Humor (Le Sens de l'Humour)
      2011 | Canada | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.4
      who was involved?

A man who appears to be a serial killer abducts two stand-up comedians to an isolated farm where he gets them to teach him how to be funny so he can stand up to those who bully him at work. This was funny even with subtitles—it might be a roar for native Quebecois speakers. (Last viewed: August 2014)

No manches Frida posterNo manches Frida (a.k.a El profesor sustituto)
      2016 | Mexico | Laughs: 5.0 (Chuckle) | imdb: 5.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

When he gets out of jail, a man realizes that a school now stands in the place where his loot lays buried. In order to dig it up, he gets himself hired as a teacher and soon appears to be the only one able to handle the rougher kids.

This Mexican adaptation of he German Fack Ju Göthe may not be quite as efficient as the original, but it still managed to make me chuckle.

There's a sequel No manches Frida 2 which I'm not sure I'll to watch given the inferior rating.

Neighbors posterNeighbors
      2014 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A young couple is in love with lifestyle moves they have recently made, such as having a baby and buying a house. When a fraternity moves in next door, the bubble pops and war ensues.

Given the theme, there were far fewer crass moments than could be expected. Although this is by no means a great comedy, it had some very funny moments and I found it entertaining enough to deserve a watch. (Last viewed: September 2014)

American Reunion posterAmerican Reunion
      2012 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The only reason I came to watch the nth installment of American Pie is that I realized the script had been written by the same duo who gave us Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Well, don't get too excited, these two movies are in very different brackets. After five minutes, we had almost given up on this story of the 13th reunion of a group of high school buddies, and after 35 minutes we decided to pause it for the day. But we came back to it the next day, and I was glad we stuck with it because once you go over a certain threshold, the film does have some good moments. By the same token, I could just as well have skipped it entirely. This is not a roarer, but it will please those who like their movies crass. (Last viewed: February 2015)

Super Troopers 2 posterSuper Troopers 2
      2018 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is one of those rare comedy movies that gets better the longer you stick with it (for the first hour anyhow). The opening scene was so bad that I nearly quit there and then. I'm glad I didn't.

Don't get me wrong: the movie is bad. But it's bad in the right ways, which is to say that in the middle of all the nonsense there are some very funny moments. The Danny DeVito joke was the best comedy-movie-laugh I had this year. But the last half-hour or so is a waste of time.

The plot? The transition of a strip of land along Vermont's northern border from Canadian to US sovereignty, and the resulting confrontation between equally inept US and Canadian cops.

This made me want to go watch the original Super Troopers again. I had rated it highly, so I expected the original to be way funnier. As it turns out, the sequel was superior, at least for me. (Last viewed: August 2018)

Hollywoo posterHollywoo
      2011 | France | Laughs: 5.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 5.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

If they had dropped the first letter of Hollywood instead of the last, it would have made a better title for this movie, so strong and pervasive is the French accent. You know, Ollywood

Seeing her livelihood threatened when an American TV series' lead actress whose voice she dubs quits the show over a heartache, a French woman travels to Los Angeles to convince the actress to resume the series. If you're intimate with both cultures, you'll probably smile a lot and you may even laugh. If not, I recommend you find something else to watch. (Last viewed: June 2015)

The Hangover Part II DVDThe Hangover Part II
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 4.7 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

It's hard to like a movie when you don't find any of the characters likable. I didn't love the first Hangover to start with. Perhaps it's age, but I don't relate to any of the activities depicted in the movie. But if you're a party animal, maybe you'll enjoy this. (Last viewed: April 2012)

Jack and Jill posterJack and Jill
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 4.5 (Watch Once) | imdb: 3.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Of the hundreds of comedy movies I've reviewed so far, this one has the second-lowest imdb rating. Since I usually dislike comedy that tries to draw laughter by featuring men playing women (a strange, enduring phenomenon), I was predisposed to join the ranks of the bashers, but for some reason Adam Sandler pulled off the drag thing for me. In fact, he pulled playing off two roles at onces—a Los Angeles advertising executive, and his twin sister who visits from their native Bronx for the holidays.

At the risk of sounding too contrarian, I'll advance that there were some good comedy moments in this film, especially in the first half. It's far from being the worst movie with Adam Sandler who, although he's starred in some terrific comedies, has also picked a number of duds. (Last viewed: August 2015)

MacGruber posterMacGruber
      2010 | USA | Laughs: 4.5 | imdb: 5.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A CIA operative whose trademark is a lucky mix of brilliance and incompetence goes up against his nemesis, who has taken control of a nuclear warhead.

Is there a point in comedy that can be characterized as filthy, but not too filthy? If so, for me this movie hits that spot. Doing so, it also manages to be funny, but not too funny.

The night I watched this, my other option was a high-brow black-and-white movie with subtitles. I knew what I was getting into, and given the mood I was in, I had no regrets. (Last viewed: January 2019)

What's in a Name? posterWhat's in a Name? (Le Prénom)
      2012 | France | Laughs: 4.5 (Chuckle) | imdb: 7.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

During a Parisian dinner between friends, a heated discussion leads to a series of arguments. Despite the title and the official synopsis, only a small part of this movie is about a couple's supposed decision to name their unborn son after a famous dictator. Had I known this, I would have watched it a lot sooner.

The intimate atmosphere within a single setting reminded me of Un Air de Famille, that psychological masterpiece. This film is not quite as accomplished, but it is a lot funnier, although for me it never quite managed to break the laughter barrier.

For a North American audience, the volume and intensity of the discussions may come as a cultural shock. Recommended.

      2010 | Canada | Laughs: 4.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.5

An wounded American gunman arrives in a Canadian village, where he struggles to cope with the locals' kindness. A cute, unpretentious movie that bears watching if you have an interest in cross-cultural issues and are in the mood for something clean, sweet and easy. (Last viewed: December 2013)

L'ora legale posterL'ora legale
      2017 | Italy | Laughs: 4.5 (Chuckle) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

When a small town's new mayor applies to the letter his election promise of applying the law — ending with cronyism and the practice of turning a blind eye —, chaos ensues.

According to several Italians I've spoken with, this pleasant film by comedy duo Ficarra & Picone does a great job of showing how things work (or don't, depending on perspective) in Italy.
