Just Go With It DVDJust Go With It
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 8.9 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.4

When a plastic surgeon's new girlfriend finds a wedding ring in his pocket (a ring he uses as a "pick-up instrument"), he panics and tells her he's about to divorce. To convince her, he asks his assistant to play the role of his ex-wife. As the web of lies grows, the surgeon acquires "fake children", and the whole party finds itself on a "get to know one another" trip to Hawaii. The movie starts slow, but the comic power steadily builds up, so that by the halfway point you're really laughing. It's great to see Adam Sandler back in Hawaii (hello 50 First Dates). Sandler does not have a writing credit on this film, but it contains many sandlerisms, so he must have contributed his share of material. Some critics say that the movie is a weak remake of Cactus Flower (1969), but these are snobs in search of ways to flaunt their cinematographic knowledge. Don't believe them: Just Go with It is marvelously funny, Cactus Flower is not. (Last viewed: February 2012)

Bridesmaids DVDBridesmaids
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 8.8 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Now well past thirty, Annie has been struggling to find a footing in love, business and life at large. Chosen to be the maid of honor at her best friend's wedding, she now has a hard time dealing with the plans for an expensive event that symbolizes success for her woman friends. Most of all, she struggles with another bridesmaid who seems to have it all. This movie made me laugh a lot. Despite the laughs, I can't say that I loved Bridesmaids. Why? Many of the situations reminded me of one of the things I dislike in the States—the horrendous fakeness of social interactions in certain contexts. The least real part of the movie was the young policeman with an Irish accent, played by the same actor as Roy from The IT Crowd, whom it was a pleasure to see again. Bad Grandpa posterBad Grandpa
      2013 | USA | Laughs: 8.0 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 6.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Bad Grandpa will not enter the hall of fame of those rare comedies which, in addition to making you laugh, present a great story told in a wholesome manner. But it does belong in the laugh-out-loud category, which is rare enough in these days of gutter cinema.

Be warned that the movie is often crude. That's not my thing, but it doesn't go as far down that track as many comedies of recent years, and if you can forgive the frequent crassness, there's still lots to laugh about.

The plot is simple enough: bad grandpa takes his grandson on a road trip. But the premise is one I had never encountered: the story is largely weaved from a series of candid camera moments.

Nearly forty years after the South African Funny People, the candid camera genre is alive and well.

To watch if you want to laugh and are willing to forgive the occasional bits of graphic humor. (Last viewed: January 2014)

Supercondriaque posterSupercondriac (Supercondriaque)
      2014 | France | Laughs: 8.0 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 6.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A hypochondriac inserts himself into the life of his doctor, driving him mad, and his wife even more. (If you like this kind of plot, check out What About Bob.) The unhurried set-up was hilarious. About halfway through the movie, when they started to inject a plot, I braced myself for the end of the laughs as that's typically what happens — more action, less comedy. But they managed to keep the fun until the end, with few flat moments in between. I can't say that I laughed hard, but I laughed consistently. It had been a long time since a comedy had made me laugh so much. Don't miss this one.

Edit: on my first rewatch eight years later, I was surprised to see that it still worked for me. As of mid-September, it's the funniest movie I've watched in all of 2022.

The Dictator posterThe Dictator
      2012 | USA | Laughs: 7.8 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Stripped of his signature beard, a dictator who is stranded in New York struggles to reclaim his post before an imposter signs a new constitution for his beloved homeland.

If you are not easily offended, this movie has some terrific moments. You just have to take the good with the bad. I'm not a fan of the many crass bits, but Baron Cohen has the rare ability to keep gags coming at top speed, and the movie left me with a good fill of laughs. (Last viewed: July 2015)

Clear History PosterClear History
      2013 | USA | Laughs: 7.8 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Publicly ridiculed for having sold his stake in a start-up company months before it would have earned him a billion dollars, an aging exec moves to an island after changing his name and appearance. Ten years later, his former business partner moves to the same island but doesn't recognize the man who would be happy to blow up his mansion. I laughed. This film is a treat for fans of Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm. More than that, it is one of the funniest comedies in recent years (which, admittedly, will not be remembered as the golden years of the comedy genre). (Last viewed: September 2013)

Johnny English Reborn DVDJohnny English Reborn
      2011 | USA | Laughs: 7.8 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is one of the rare occasions when the sequel far surpasses the original—easy to do when the original was the atrocious Johnny English. Roy Atkinson is back as a comic James Bond, a role that suits him well. This time there's enough of a script, and the movie made me laugh a few times. In creating the main character, the writers found a fine balance between hero and anti-hero. Johnny English is sometimes succesful on his own merits, and that makes the movie much more enjoyable than parodies where the "hero" is a complete goof. (Last viewed: May 2012)

Dinner for Shmucks DVDDinner for Shmucks
      2010 | USA | Laughs: 7.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 5.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

An ambitious professional receives the mission of inviting an "idiot" for dinner to entertain his boss. Many laughs in this Hollywood adaptation of The Dinner Game, one of the funniest movies ever, but the US version pales in comparison to the French original. Well, it's Hollywood, and they just had to show the dinner—easily the weakest scene in the movie; it truly is a dinner for shmucks, and the shmucks are the Hollywood people who asked for the dinner scene. Oh, and the movie also had to feature an utterly stupid romance. On the redeeming side, I was thrilled to see Jemaine Clement, a brilliant New Zealand actor (Flight of the Conchords, Eagle vs Shark). Fck You, Goethe posterSuck Me Shakespeer (Fack ju Göhte)
      2013 | Germany | Laughs: 7.2 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

In order to dig up his loot, a hot ex-convict gets hired to teach at a high-school, where it soon appears that he alone can get through to the tough kids. This was like watching a decent American comedy, but in German: a predictable plot, but laughs and lots of smiles. Given how hard it is to come by a comedy movie in German, I highly recommend this one.

The first sequel, Suck Me Shakespeer 2, is not quite as funny. I haven't yet watched the second sequel, Suck Me Shakespeer 3.

The Mexican adaptation Non manches Frida is not terrible.

Che Bella Giornata posterWhat a Beautiful Day (Che Bella Giornata)
      2011 | Italy | Laughs: 7.1 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Thanks to some string-pulling, an incompetent security guard obtains a job with the Catholic church. An attractive would-be terrorist of Arab origins selects him as the perfect vehicle to carry explosives into a monument.

This movie was a great excuse to showcase caricatures of Italian national traits. I'm sure some of the regional nuances were lost on me, but I laughed a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed the humor. The funniest Italian comedy I'd seen in a while.

The weakest part is the poster, which, incredibly, does not show Checco's female counterpart. (Last viewed: August 2017)

Smetto Quando Voglio posterI Can Quit Whenever I Want (Smetto Quando Voglio)
      2014 | Italy | Laughs: 7.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Out of work due to funding cuts and needing to make ends meet, a group of brilliant university professors start marketing a new drug of their invention. Oftentimes modern Italian comedies have an inconsistent "voice", dipping into other genres in midstream. Not the case here, and this was the most solid Italian comedy I've seen in a while. In some ways this may be because the production follows an "American formula", much like contemporary German comedies such as the Fack ju Göhte franchise. I laughed a few times and we smiled a lot. A Perfect Plan - Un Plan Parfait posterA Perfect Plan (Un Plan Parfait)
      2012 | France | Laughs: 7.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

I watch many comedies, and sometimes I must endure a long streak without laughing once. This movie broke such a streak. If it doesn't have the highest imdb rating, that's probably because it suffers from high expectations by people who loved Dany Boon's Welcome to the Sticks. But from my standpoint as a volume consumer of comedy films, this was the best romantic comedy I'd seen in a while, and it made me laugh. It's very well put together, it has a clever plot, and there's no overacting—a rare treat in this genre. Ah, the plot? It involves a family where first marriages seem to be cursed… so that one of the daughters, eager to marry her boyfriend of ten years, decides to resort to a sham marriage-and-divorce before tying the knot for good. I will admit with shame that early on, some of the pleasure stems from seeing someone who appears at first to be the prototype of the attractive haughty woman suffer. But there is more, and the comedic power is well shared among several actors of the fine cast. If you enjoy French comedies, don't miss this one. (Last viewed: July 2014)

Tour de Pharmacy posterTour de Pharmacy
      2017 | USA | Laughs: 7.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This forty-minute mockumentary alleges to document the 1982 Tour de France and the widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs on that event. It's uneven—sometimes fairly subtle, sometimes awfully crass—but there should be enough in there to keep you entertained for the length of this short film. (Last viewed: September 2017)

The Inbetweeners 2 posterThe Inbetweeners 2
      2014 | U.K. | Laughs: 7.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Three young men from England go to Australia on holiday to visit one of their mates, who has promised them that Oz is a paradise for those with promiscuous interests. This movie is easily one of the crudest I've ever watched. And yet, in the midst of all the ear-bendingly foul language, there are a large number of comical situations that make it worth a watch for those with a high profanity threshold. I won't lie to you: just thinking about it, I'm still smiling. (Last viewed: December 2014)

Intouchables posterIntouchables (Les Intouchables)
      2011 | France | Laughs: 7.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 8.5

A billionaire in a wheel chair hires a young man from the burbs as his next personal carer. Thanks to Omar Sy's charisma, this comedy that follows the classic "odd couple" premise is particularly successful. I laughed and look forward to watching it again. (Last viewed: May 2015)
