I Do Prête-Moi ta Main posterI Do (Prête-Moi ta Main)
      2006 | France | Laughs: 3.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

To relieve the relentless efforts of his mother and sister to find him a bride, a middle-aged bachelor hires a fake fiancée who is assigned first to seduce his family, second to "break his heart" by not showing at the altar. A fairly predictable romantic comedy that is entirely watchable but short on laughs. (Last viewed: April 2015)

Johnny English DVDJohnny English
      2003 | U.K. | Laughs: 2.8 (Just Awful) | imdb: 6.2
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Sorry. I laughed hard at many of the old Mr. Bean series, but Roy Atkinson's ventures on the big screen haven't work on me. Something about needing a plot, perhaps. To give you an example, in this movie, jewels get robbed. The next day, investigators follow the tunnel right below the robbery location and immediately stumble upon the robbers in a room at the end of the tunnel. The whole script is on the same level of pathetic. Surprisingly, the sequel (Johnny English Reborn) is worth a watch. (Last viewed: January 2011)

Organize Isler Magic Carpet Ride posterMagic Carpet Ride (Organize Isler)
      2005 | Turkey | Laughs: 2.8 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This movie is basically about a gang of criminals with good hearts, a nice family who wants to get even after discovering they bought a stolen car, and romance.

It's not terribly funny by Western standards (apologies to Turkey for drawing the East-West line at the Bosphorus in the context of comedy) but it's cute and light-hearted, and the sweeping helicopter views of Istanbul and its beautiful outskirts were just what I needed in order to feel warm on a Winter day. Ninette posterNinette
      2005 | Spain | Laughs: 2.8 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 5.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

All recent Spanish comedies I've watched have featured bare female chests, and this one is no exception. Perhaps that's what it takes to get a film funded in Spain.

If you ignore that rather cheesy incentive to draw libidinous males to the theater, you're left with a surprisingly decent movie. During the Franco years, a Spaniard goes on a vacation to Paris, hoping for promiscuous encounters with indigenous females, a prospect that an expatriate friend has advertised to him as a daily occurrence. Before he's had time to unpack his suitcase, the landlady's daughter draws him into a relationship that will keep him glued to the apartment for his entire stay.

I don't think either of us laughed, but we were thoroughly entertained for most of this light-hearted movie. (Last viewed: February 2017)

Der Schuh des Manitu posterManitou's Shoe (Der Schuh des Manitu)
      2001 | Germany | Laughs: 2.8 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This film is a bit of an anomaly: a mock-Western movie by a German director, in German. Much of it is nonsensical, in the tradition of Mel Brooks, and since Brooks's humor leaves me cold, the movie didn't make me laugh once. That being said, it's not all anachronisms, burlesque and cabaret. There are also elements of the Raiders of the Lost Ark that might keep you watching if you're committed. Sadly, I saw it dubbed. It might have been funnier with German voices. (Last viewed: July 2014)

A Boyfriend for My Wife posterA Boyfriend for My Wife (Un novio para mi mujer)
      2008 | Argentina | Laughs: 2.8 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Sick-and-tired of his pesky wife but too timid to break up, a man hires an aging Don Juan to seduce her away. This is a very watchable romantic comedy, but don't expect any belly laughs. (Last viewed: January 2018)

Charlie & Boots posterCharlie & Boots
      2009 | Australia | Laughs: 2.6 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is not the kind of movie I call a "comedy", though it is certainly light-hearted.

The two main actors from Crocodile Dundee and Kenny together in an Australian road trip movie: that's a big draw, a formula that promises entertainment, fine landscapes, a good yarn, laughs and lots of smiles. But I'm sure you sure know that when the studios think they have a winning formula in hand, they under-deliver. The landscapes are there, the actors do a great job, the movie is sweet— but the story is very thin indeed. The film cruises on the skill (or looks) of the actors and the beauty of the landscapes, which are conveniently devoid of the hordes of retired baby boomers living in caravans filled with made-in-China junk—the hordes that litter every Australian back-road these days. A silent documentary would have done the trick. (Last viewed: January 2014)

Bridget Jones The Edge of Reason DVDBridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
      2004 | U.K. | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Although not awful, this sequel is only half as good as the original, and not really worth watching unless you are enamored with one of the actors. The plot has a lot less humor, and a lot more drama about Bridget losing and regaining her perfect man (whose character, despite the actor's excellent performance, is unrealistic, so patient is he with Bridget). There are funny moments, but also others when the script writers throw you some low balls (Bridget on mushrooms; Darcy's attractive female workmate turns out to be fond of women) that earn the movie a firm spot on the "skip" list. Big Nothing posterBig Nothing
      2006 | U.K. | Laughs: 2.5 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A call center employee gets approached by a con man to extort money from a perverted clergyman for a good cause. Everything goes wrong (would you have guessed it?) and dead bodies soon pile up.

After twenty minutes, I almost gave up on the movie as it felt like it was going to be painfully predictable. However, the script took a couple of left turns and the rest of the film was entertaining enough to keep watching, with a couple of chuckles here and there. That being said, if you skip it you won't have missed much. (Last viewed: October 2015)

He Died with a Felafel in His Hand posterHe Died with a Felafel in His Hand
      2001 | Australia | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

When debt collectors get too close, an aspiring writer moves from a bad shared housing situation to the next. This by now classic Aussie comedy is a pleasant watch, but don't expect big laughs as the humor largely stays on the level of understated irony. (Last viewed: Mar 2002 February 2016)

Slackers poster 2002Slackers
      2002 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Chuckle) | imdb: 5.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This college campus movie features a group of young men who have perfected the art of cheating and other scams. Threatened of being denounced by a fellow student, they agree to help him hook up with the young woman he has been stalking.

As college movies go, this one is fairly amusing without being excessively crass. That being said, it's far from being a side-splitting number.

Isi/Disi posterIsi Disi (a.k.a Amor a lo bestia)
      2004 | Spain | Laughs: 2.5 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 4.4
      who was involved?

To repay a huge fine, a heavy metal band must win a rigged contest to select the most "destructive" band.

While there is a lot to dislike about this movie (loudness, gratuitous nudity…) it is surprisingly not awful. The plot certainly rivals that of any average American comedy, which may explain why I almost laughed (once).

Despite its failure to deliver laughs, the movie gave lots to smile at. I found myself rooting for the good guys. I also told myself that the movie—with its extravagant outbursts and fascination with heavy metal—was a window into some aspects of Spanish culture, although I am not sure which. The Tiger and the Snow posterThe Tiger and the Snow (La Tigre e la Neve)
      2005 | Italy | Laughs: 2.5 | imdb: 7.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This movie truly sits somewhere on the border between comedy and tragedy. On the one hand you have Roberto Benigni playing his usual character, bringing abundant smiles. On the other hand you have war and a loved one at the edge of death. In my view this is a terrific movie—but save it for a day when you're in the mood for romantic comedy drama. A Lot Like Love posterA Lot Like Love
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The paths of a young man and a young woman cross over six years, but the time never seem right for them to enter a relationship together. This was not the kind of comedy that makes you laugh, but as a romance it is tight, with pleasant performances by Ashton Kutcher and his female counterpart.

Recommended as a movie to watch as a couple when you're in the mood for smiles.

Tenure posterTenure
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 2.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A professor at a small college is up for tenure, and discovers with anxiety that he will be competing with a recent hire from an ivy-league school.

This movie takes so long to get going that for a moment I had to wonder if it was Canadian—no disrespect implied, I enjoy Corner Gas as much as the next northerner.

I nearly gave up, but there was just enough to keep me watching (decent cast, endearing characters), and the second half was far superior to the first, starting with the sales seminar scene. Overall, probably not worth your time, not because the movie is bad, but because there are better ones to choose from. (Last viewed: April 2018)
