 DVDThe 40-Year-Old Virgin
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 3.5 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 7.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

I like Steve Carell, and if anyone can pull off the role of a 40-year-old who is still a virgin, it is he, but this movie doesn't really make me laugh. In some ways, this is a cute story. In other ways, it's another boring excuse to show a group of men talking dirty. If you're stuck at home with the flu and run out of things to watch, this film will help you kill a couple of hours. Otherwise, skip it. (Last viewed: February 2012)

Prom Wars posterProm Wars
      2008 | Canada | Laughs: 3.5 (Watch Once) | imdb: 5.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The senior students at a girls' school set up a competition to determine which of two boys' high schools' seniors will take them to prom. I didn't laugh but did smile a lot—the movie is cute and refreshingly not crass. Save it for a day when you're happy to watch something easy without expectations. (Last viewed: August 2014)

      2002 | Germany | Laughs: 3.5 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.5
      who was involved?

If you've ever been around a construction site, you'll appreciate this comedy about an architecture student who lands an internship among rugged builders. I can't say that I laughed, but I smiled throughout. An entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable little film. (Last viewed: September 2014)

Little Miss Sunshine DVDLittle Miss Sunshine
      2006 | USA | Laughs: 3.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Five stars. Dad is bankrupt, mom wants a divorce, grandpa snorts heroin, uncle Frank has just tried to kill himself, big brother doesn't speak, but everyone piles up in a VW van to bring little sister to a beauty pageant in California. Great story about who we are, and splendid acting, not least by Alan Arkin, who was already an amazing actor forty years earlier in The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming. Kabluey DVDKabluey
      2007 | USA | Laughs: 3.2 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This movie missed the "unwatchable" category by a hair: after about twenty minutes, right when we were about to give up, it took a turn for the better. Still not laugh-out-loud, but a cute tender story about a man regarded by his family as a loser (he hands out flyers in a blue alien suit on a low-traffic road) and who turns out to be a calming influence on his sister-in-law and her two frantic boys. What a Girl Wants posterWhat a Girl Wants
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 3.2 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 5.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

An American teenage girl travels to the U.K. to finally meet her dad, a prominent politician of royal lineage. Although the film had its entertaining moments—mostly the poking fun at stuck-up people kind—it was a waste of a very decent cast, including Colin Firth and Amanda Bynes, who had shone in She's The Man. Wedding Crashers DVDWedding Crashers
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 3.1 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Two buddies have perfected a routine whereby they crash weddings and hit on attractive singles. The beginning was a bit hard to watch because the two men kept referring to a list of rules (e.g. "rule number 21"), which was both idiotic and instantly unbelievable. Apart from that, this is a decent romantic comedy (as that largely appalling genre goes) that will probably make you smile and perhaps laugh once or twice. Things get interesting when the friends board a boat to spend the weekend with the bride and her wealthy family, evoking a distant taste of Meet the Parents, which also featured Owen Wilson. What Women Want DVDWhat Women Want
      2000 | USA | Laughs: 3.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.4
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

After an electric shock, a macho ad executive acquires the gift of hearing the thoughts of all the women he comes across. He goes through the predictable phases: horror at his predicament, glee in light of its potential benefits, reform from macho-man into sensitive guy, loss of the gift. Highly recommended if you're desperate to see a lot of Mel Gibson without a shirt and you really wish men would change. Otherwise, I wouldn't rush to the video store, but if someone wants to make you watch it, it's not a bad piece of entertainment. If only they had cast Paul Hogan—another Australian, not much seen outside of Crocodile Dundee. (Last viewed: July 2012)

Les ParrainsThe Do-Gooders (Les Parrains)
      2005 | France | Laughs: 3.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 5.7
      who was involved?

Three former criminals are reunited when their old companion bequeaths them the lost diamonds from their last venture—under the condition that they track down his son and give him his share of the loot. Between Gérard Lanvin from numerous bad boy roles, Gérard Darmon from Diva and Betty Blue, and Jacques Villeret from The Dinner Game, the casting of the three scumbags couldn't have been better. It's a shame no one told the producers to buy a decent script. I laughed once. With Villeret now gone, I feel sad about this wasted chance for an epic comedy. (Last viewed: August 2013)

Go for Zucker DVDGo for Zucker (Alles auf Zucker)
      2004 | Germany | Laughs: 3.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

When their mother dies, two brothers (one an orthodox Jew from Hamburg, the other one a secular gambler from former East Berlin) must follow Jewish tradition for a week and reconcile, or else they will lose their inheritance. It's rare to see Jewish culture in a contemporary German context, though apart from East-West themes little about the movie is particularly German—with minor adjustments it could have taken place in London, New York or Tel Aviv. A decent watch that could have been over-the-top but achieved a good balance. It should keep you smiling. (Last viewed: October 2012)

WaydowntownWaydowntown
      2000 | Canada | Laughs: 3.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Four coworkers have made a bet as to who could spend the most days without leaving the air-conditioned complex of retail space and office space in which they work. No big laughs, but a very decent watch in the tradition of Office Space, featuring Don McKellar, the brilliant creator of Last Day and the TV series Twitch City, where he played the role of a recluse who never leaves his apartment. Go Canada! (Last viewed: April 2013)

White Wedding posterWhite Wedding
      2009 | South Africa | Laughs: 3.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 5.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A vast distance away from Cape Town, where his wedding is schedule for the end of the week, a man runs into a number of obstacles as he and his best friends tackle the long drive. This was a light-hearted movie rather than the laugh-out-loud comedy I was hoping for, but I enjoyed it all the same. Having never visited South Africa, I found the movie culturally fascinating. After watching a number of movies that depict the country grimly, it was a nice change to see people go about their lives with none of the usual stress—only the unusual stress of their wedding risking to fall apart.       wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The owner of a vintage record store muses over his memorable break-ups. This movie has strong characters, a pleasant soundtrack and a script that is fairly clever without trying too hard, making it a good watch, as with most movies directed by Stephen Frears. (Last viewed: November 2012)

After their upstairs neighbor dies, the dwellers of an apartment building scheme to retrieve the cash from his lottery winnings. This is the kind of offbeat comedy that makes you smirk rather than laugh. I enjoyed it. (Last viewed: October 2017)

Im Juli posterIn July (Im Juli)
      2000 | Germany | Laughs: 3.0 (Smirk) | imdb: 7.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Directed by Fatih Akın, my favorite German director, this movie is probably my favorite romantic comedy of all times. And I don't even speak German.

Hoping to get close to a man, a young woman tries to make him believe that their encounter was fate. He misreads the sign and follows the wrong woman all the way from Hamburg to Istanbul.

I don't know if this movie makes me laugh out loud, but it sure makes me grin a lot. It's incredibly sweet, and it has lots of texture. If you've never watched it, treat yourself. I watch it every five years or so and it's always equally as fresh.
