Hot Fuzz DVDHot Fuzz
      2007 | U.K. | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A London supercop gets sent to a small village, where gruesome accidents seem to take place at an alarming frequency. On the good side, it was fun to see the "baddies" be ordinary white folk for once instead of dark-skinned foreigners. On the bad side, the sound was terrible—this is one of these movies where they amplify every little sound (such as the turn of a door knob) in order to add texture. The shoot-them-up action scene at the never-ending end (did it take a quarter of the movie?) was also tiresome. (Last viewed: November 2012)

School of Rock posterSchool of Rock
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.1
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A destitute musician impersonates his roommate to get hired as a school teacher at a prep school, where he undertakes to instruct his class in Rock'n Roll.

The premise reminded me of Fck You Goethe (which this movie predates by ten years). Although there were no hard laughs, the movie was consistently funny, thanks both to the kids and to Jack Black, who saved no energy putting on this impressive performance. A fun watch. (Last viewed: November 2016)

Brice de Nice DVDThe Brice Man (Brice de Nice)
      2005 | France | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 5.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

On the Mediterranean coast, where the waves are few, a man has lived for years with the delusion that he is a champion surfer. I was curious about this movie because it features Jean Dujardin, who I first discovered in the OSS 117 series. It made me chuckle, and it is interesting in an arthouse kind of way, but I doubt it would have much interest unless you were either (i) fluent in French, (ii) a surf enthusiast or (iii) a cult movie hound. Envy posterEnvy
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 4.8
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

As a man becomes astoundingly wealthy thanks to an invention that initially sounded hare-brained, his best friend has a hard time coping with his mounting jealousy. This theme will be familiar to many who scratched their heads in astonishment as they watched acquaintances attain sudden fortune during the dot-com boom years — which ended four years before the movie's release. Despite its poor ratings, I found it funny and enjoyed the performances by Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Amy Poehler. (Last viewed: October 2014)

The Proposal DVDThe Proposal
      2009 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A Canadian national blackmails her executive assistant into marrying her so she can keep her New York job. When she travels to Alaska to meet her fiancé's family, she discovers that he isn't quite the "poor boy" she had pegged him as. I find Ryan Reynolds consistently funny, and the first half of the movie made me laugh a few times. It struck a few pleasant familiar chords—such as Meet the Parents and Green Card. Sadly, just as at it crosses the halfway mark, the movie abandons the comedy genre and powers on as a pure romance. This will make it a great watch if you love chick flicks, but in the world of laughs, the movie loses many points, though it's still worth a watch. (Last viewed: January 2013)

Keeping the Faith DVDKeeping the Faith
      2000 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.3
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Two best friends (a rabbi and a priest) are reunited with a girl who was their other best friend when they were eight. Only now they both fall in love with her. As romantic comedies go, this one isn't too sappy, perhaps because it's got more than one track. I like it when Ben Stiller isn't playing a freak. This is one of his better roles. In large part thanks to him, the movie has many funny moments. The rest of the cast performs well too, and it's an enjoyable watch. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Harold & Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay DVDHarold & Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 4.9 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.6
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Only watch if you want to see a perfect comedy balance wasted. In this sequel to Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, the writers destroy the character of Kumar, turning the brilliant young man into an insensitive jerk. Harold's character is unchanged, but the magic is lost. No doubt, some good moments can be found in the middle of a hundred minutes of sewer-level language and situations. The Year of the Tick posterThe Year of the Tick (El año de la garrapata)
      2004 | Spain | Laughs: 4.8 (Chuckle) | imdb: 5.9
      who was involved?

In a time of economic hardship, a group of young adult friends answer their existential questions with sloth, drugs and humor.

Even though it makes me smile and chuckle more than laugh, this is one of my favorite Spanish comedies. It has attitude, but with a light touch. Although it predates the prolonged "crisis" that started in 2007, it feels like it was filmed yesterday.

As a loving student of the Spanish language, I enjoyed having to pause many times to look up words, as the movie is full of delightful slang.

Scoop DVDScoop
      2006 | USA | Laughs: 4.6 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.6
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

This "crime comedy" by Woody Allen is tight and well cast. It has a few good chuckles (no belly laughs), but I was too nervous with the crime story to truly enjoy it. I don't know what happened to Woody Allen in the 21st century, but since about 2005 he seems to have matured tremendously—perhaps that's what turning 70 does to you. In the 1990s I had become allergic to his films, but I've found several of his late productions to be polished, accomplished films. (Last viewed: January 2012)

Guess Who posterGuess Who
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 4.5 (Watch Once) | imdb: 5.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A young man and his girlfriend plan to announce their engagements to her African-American parents, who are unaware of his pale skin condition.

Race issues are often treated in comedy, not always in the most subtle way. I was pleasantly surprised at the consistently light tone maintained throughout the movie, which entertained me. (Last viewed: January 1970)

La matassa posterLa matassa
      2009 | Italy | Laughs: 4.5 (Chuckle) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Two cousins divided by a family feud find themselves entangled in the management of the family hotel, prey to extortion by gangsters.

This was the first time I watched a movie by the comedy duo Ficarra & Picone, whose series Incastrati I had ejoyed.

At first, Valentino Picone's overacting made me cringe, but the movie soon found a reasonable balance. It was entertaining enough to make me curious to watch other movies featuring the same duo.

Saving Grace DVDSaving Grace
      2000 | U.K. | Laughs: 4.4 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

If you have never left your house and nor watched a comedy before, you might laugh. Otherwise, this is just another cute feel good movie—a fairly weak and boring one, despite everyone's good intentions. Two saving graces: the brief appearances of Tcheky Karyo (who was Bob in the original Nikita) and Bill Bailey (who was Bob in Black Books). (Last viewed: March 2012)

The Invention of Lying DVDThe Invention of Lying
      2009 | U.K. | Laughs: 4.3 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

I'm not part of the sizable population of viewers who hate Ricky Gervais, so I was prepared to laugh as this movie had a good premise: in a world where everyone always tells the truth, one man discovers lying. Sadly, the execution was poor. For instance, the truth-tellers in Ricky's world feel compelled to blurt out things such as "I hate this job" or "you look awful" without prompting when they meet strangers, which borders on the pathological, and is certainly not the same as not lying. The movie would have worked better if the characters kept their mouths shut a lot more, speaking when asked, like "normal people". From that basis, there was a lot of room for comical situations. Skip unless you're a huge fan of Ricky's. (Last viewed: April 2012)

La Maison du Bonheur posterThe House of Happiness (a.k.a Happy Home) (La Maison du Bonheur)
      2006 | France | Laughs: 4.2 (Watch Once) | imdb: 5.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A man lets a real estate agent convince him to buy a country home not far from Paris. He overpays, borrows too much, hires the wrong crew to renovate—and everything goes downhill from there. I didn't enjoy the first hour. All the bad things that kept happening to that poor guy made me cringe, so for me it felt more like horror than comedy. After he hits rock bottom, some real comedy starts to happen, and I had a couple of good laughs towards the end. (Last viewed: August 2014)

      2006 | USA | Laughs: 4.1 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Given a remote control that lets him fast-forward through the unpleasant moments of life, an ambitious architect (Adam Sandler) soon finds himself jumping through years at a time. It feels like the studio, armed with a strong concept and a reliable comedian, didn't bother writing a funny script. Too bad. (Last viewed: July 2010)
