The In-Laws 2003 posterThe In-Laws
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 0.5 (Just Awful) | imdb: 5.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is a remake of a funny 1979 movie by the same name. Days before his daughter's wedding, a risk-avoiding podiatrist meets the groom's father, who entangles him in the cross-border sale of a nuclear submarine. Albert Brooks slides right into Alan Arkin's shoes, but Michael Douglas can't hold the candle to Peter Falk. The movie can't decide whether it should be about plain comedy or espionage, and ends up settling on a formula of beautiful people and special effects on expensive sets. Alan Arkin and Ryan Reynolds are grossly underused, while Michael Douglas is grossly overused. We couldn't get past the first half. (Last viewed: August 2015)

Melvin Goes to Dinner posterMelvin Goes to Dinner
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 0.5 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.8
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

I'm not sure how this ever came to be classified as a comedy. Maybe it's so edgy you have to live in the New York City subway to understand it. The movie (what I saw of it) seems to wander around a group of young adults having dinner at a restaurant. Seeing that the first twenty minutes didn't raise my interest on any level, I gave up. Save yourself time, go have dinner with your own friends. (Last viewed: December 2013)

      2007 | France | Laughs: 0.5 (Just Awful) | imdb: 7.3

A cartoonish collage of moments in the last days of a self-absorbed advertising executive's life. Neither funny nor pleasant to watch. For my taste, this was a complete waste of time. (Last viewed: November 2012)

Iznogoud posterIznogoud
      2005 | France | Laughs: 0.5 (Just Awful) | imdb: 3.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This adaptation of a French series of comic books is just as awful—perhaps more—than its rating. I decided to try it because of my fondness for Jacques Villeret, the lead actor from The Dinner Game. After watching and cringing for a solid twenty minutes, I skipped to all the bits featuring Villeret. Spare yourself the effort, it's not worth it. (Last viewed: August 2014)

The Method El Método posterThe Method (El Método)
      2005 | Argentina | Laughs: 0.5 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The seven final candidates to an executive position are pitted one against the other in a psychological game to determine the hire. The movie ranks high for dramatic tension on a low budget (most of it takes place in a board room). While I recommend it, don't watch it if you're hoping to laugh—the comdedy tag on imdb seems inadequate. (Last viewed: August 2018)

La suerte está echada posterThe Die Is Cast (La suerte está echada)
      2005 | Argentina | Laughs: 0.2 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.1
      who was involved?

An actor with a physique such that he could be called the Argentinian Ben Stiller inherits a dying man's bad luck and becomes a mufa, a jinx. The plot involves a half-brother and his romantic interest, the two men's dying father, and tango lessons. At times it is slow and meandering in the way that Argentinian movies used to be known for, but on the whole the film is a pleasant watch. Just don't come here looking for laughs. Wonder Boys posterWonder Boys
      2000 | USA | Laughs: 0.2 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Not a laugh-out-loud comedy but a light-hearted movie in which an iconic writer struggling with his second novel deals with his lover, his editor and gifted students of his.

I'm not usually a huge fan of Michael Douglas but he was perfect for the role, as was the rest of the cast, making this a surprisingly pleasant watch.

Out Cold posterOut Cold
      2001 | USA | Laughs: 0.2 (Just Awful) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This might be a great movie if you're a snowboarding fan and you and some friends are coming back drunk from a party. In all other cases, it's an outright bore, notwithstanding the presence of Zach Galifianakis.

A run-down Alaskan ski resort is taken over by a magnate developer from Colorado, challenging the lifestyle of the rowdy staff. The first five to ten minutes felt like a snowboarding video. Then there was a bit of unfunny plot development.

I had started this tape with the unacknowledged hope that it would hook me, allowing me to procrastinate on pending work, but even at a speed of 1.3, which sometimes fixes somewhat empty movies, there was not enough to keep me interested, and I stopped half-an-hour short and an hour too late. Save yourself the trouble.

Back to work.

Tales From The Golden Age posterTales From The Golden Age (Amintiri din epoca de aur)
      2009 | Romania | Laughs: 0.2 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is a collection of light-hearted stories—perhaps real, perhaps urban legends—from when Romania was under communist rule. It's not meant to make anyone laugh, but it's pretty funny, besides being well-made and culturally interesting. (Last viewed: August 2014)

Kamone Diner posterKamome Diner (a.k.a Kamome Shokudo) (かもめ食堂)
      2006 | Japan | Laughs: 0.1 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 7.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

When I ask for Japanese comedy recommendations, for some reason I hear about a lot of movies that turn out not to be comedies at all—as is the case here. This is a light-hearted movie about a Japanese woman starting up a diner in Finland. Part of it seems to speak to the Japanese fantasy that if only Westerners knew about their traditional cuisine, they would be crazy about it. I know this is a well-intentioned film, but I found it fairly flat, lacking in personality. On the other hand, I never really expected a Japanese movie set in Japan to have an amazing vibe. One antidote: Tampopo. (Last viewed: August 2014)

YoshinoYoshino's Barber Shop
      2004 | Japan | Laughs: 0.1 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 5.2
      who was involved?

A fascist barber wages a war to force high-school kids to wear the town's traditional bowl haircut. One boy (soon joined by others) refuses to conform. This can only be called a comedy under the very loosest sense of the term. I didn't even find it cute, but a drooling kid worshiper might disagree about that. (Last viewed: September 2012)

      2006 | South Korea | Laughs: 0.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 7.1

A young woman who believes she is a cyborg ends up in a hospital's psychiatric ward. I was looking forward to watching a Korean movie but this one bored me to death. I gave up after thirty minutes. (Last viewed: July 2014)

Volver posterVolver
      2006 | Spain | Laughs: 0.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 7.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

An elderly woman believes that her dead sister has returned to help her with household chores, and the lady's nieces (the daughters of the deceased) get increasingly involved in that ghost story.

A pleasant watch, although the cinematography is very poor (with Penélope as eye candy, perhaps they thought that no further effort was needed in that direction), but not a comedy in the "laugh-out-loud" sense of the word. (Last viewed: April 2018)

Les Doigts CrochesSticky Fingers (Les Doigts Croches)
      2009 | Canada | Laughs: 0.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

To retrieve the loot from a robbery they performed before going to jail, five French-Canadian thugs must walk 500 miles on a "transformational path" in Spain. I couldn't bear to watch more than thirty minutes of this movie that I'd picked up after really enjoying its director's next production, Starbuck. (Last viewed: April 2013)
