Ali G Aiii DVDAli G, Aiii
      2000 | U.K. | Laughs: 9.7 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Compilation of clips from Da Ali G Show, the original UK TV series featuring Sasha Baron Cohen in the role of Ali G. A fake gangsta-rapper show host interviews a number of unsuspecting people on topics ranging from politics to animal rights. The segment where Ali G quizzes a law enforcement official on the merits of various drugs is on my all-time favorite list of sure laughs. In fact, the laughs keep coming, making Aiii one of the funniest tapes in circulation today… Sadly, none of Cohen's later material that I've seen comes close for quality or potency—perhaps because to reach the mass market, the producers had to dig in the toilet and cross the line between humor and disrespect. On Aiii, there is still a sense that it's all in good fun and that the "victims" can join into the laughter once the situation is revealed. (Last viewed: September 2010)

Meet the Parents DVDMeet the Parents
      2000 | USA | Laughs: 9.7 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A man plans to propose to his girlfriend, but first he must meet her parents. You cringe and laugh as Greg (Ben Stiller) does everything—wrong—to secure the approval of her tough dad (Robert De Niro), a former CIA agent. The movie has several laugh-out-loud moments, but it is also funny throughout even if you sometimes want to scream rather than laugh, as you watch in disbelief, horrified by how Greg's situation keeps worsening by the minute, fighting the impulse to cover your face as his plight reaches new levels of awful. All the minute psychological observations that build the story's tension and humor are right on target and make this movie a delightful little marvel.

If you've enjoyed it, don't miss the 1992 original.

Step Brothers DVDStep Brothers
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 9.4 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Warning: this film has some gross-out aspects as well as adult themes, sometimes graphic. That said, I hadn't laughed that much watching a comedy in a long time. It was a surprise too as I hadn't yet seen a Will Ferrell movie that really did it for me. Two childlike forty-year-olds who live at home—one with his mom, one with his dad—get thrown together when their parents get married. At first they resent having to share their parents' attention (and a bedroom). The dynamic between the actors is fantastic. If you can handle occasional crudeness, don't miss out on this very funny movie. (Last viewed: September 2012)

My BossMy Boss's Daughter
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 9.3 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 4.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

An aspiring grunt gets to house-sit at the house of his tyrannical boss, whose daughter he fancies. Of course, everything goes wrong. Don't expect intellectual fireworks: this is good clean fun (well, almost clean), with plenty to laugh at and not much to think about. On account of the laugh-a-minute, I rate this a 7.5. Yet the film probably has one of the lowest IMDB rating of all films on this site (4.3), so evidently lots of people don't find it as funny as I do. If you're in that category, you might enjoy this film's opposite (high IMDB ratings, low laughs for me): Death at a Funeral. Interestingly, the lead actor (Ashton Kutcher) features in Dude Where's My Car, which also rates high on my laugh-o-meter and low on IMDB.

Edit: upon second viewing eleven year later, I was still entertained but didn't laugh. (Last viewed: Oct 2011 August 2022)

EuroTrip DVDEuroTrip
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 9.0 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 6.6
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Joined by three friends, a young man travels through Europe in search of a young woman from Germany he's fallen in love with over email. I know this is not a movie to remember, but it managed to make me laugh many times, which is all that matters in this section—and very rare. There are adult themes and some nudity, but none (or little) of the crassness so common in contemporary comedies. I was reluctant to watch it as I thought it was a college comedy, a genre that doesn't particularly excite me. But it worked. I was in my forties when I watched it, so even if you're way past the years when some people go to college, consider giving Eurotrip a chance. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle DVDHarold & Kumar Go to White Castle
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 8.9 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.1
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Two freshly-minted ivy-league grads roam the New Jersey suburbs one night in search of a White Castle restaurant to satisfy their cannabis munchies. It doesn't sound like much of a plot, but it delivers the laughters, right on the edge, with just about as much coarse language as I can handle in a movie. Sadly, the first sequel (Harold and Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay) is a mess, and the second sequel (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) is a dud. (Last viewed: Jul 2010 June 2011)

Get Smart DVDGet Smart
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 8.8 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.5
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Spoof spy movie featuring Steve Carell, the boss in the US version of The Office. Much of the humor draws from the spies exposing their everyday human side. Good laughs! Only reproach: it's a bit of a work-out for the eyes—I didn't need all the special effects. (Last viewed: September 2010)

Borat DVDBorat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
      2006 | USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 7.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Warning: this movie is sometimes extremely graphic and often very vulgar. I didn't want to watch it again because I remembered how vulgar it often is. So it almost pains me to say that despite all this, Borat is a very funny movie. You laugh, but the movie leaves you feeling dirty. A television reporter from Kazakhstan is sent to New York to report on America. Soon, he decides to travel cross-country in order to marry Pamela Anderson. From the way he moves to the way he speaks, Sasha Baron Cohen is simply brilliant in this role. And yet, you hate him a little bit for the crass material he subjects you to. Keep children away when you are watching. (Last viewed: Oct 2008 October 2012)

Waiting DVDWaiting
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A day with the crew of a Shenanigan's restaurant. This movie has a fair amount of gross-out humor as well as body-parts jokes—usually not my favorite—so I was surprised at how much I laughed. For one thing, the interactions between staff and customers are very funny. I am also finding that comedies with Ryan Reynolds tend to work for me. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Meet Dave DVDMeet Dave
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 8.5 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 5.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

An alien space ship lands in New York—an inconspicuous ship sized and shaped like a human being, and staffed by a crew of eraser-size humanoids who make "Dave" (as the ship is soon named) interact with the locals as though Dave were human. I don't know why this film has such a low IMDB rating. Neither vulgar nor loud, it was the best I'd seen from Eddie Murphy in years, and it had me laughing on multiple occasions. Don't miss it! Meet the Fockers DVDMeet the Fockers
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 8.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The movie made me laugh as much as Meet the Parents, perhaps more. Seen from the viewpoint of this page (movies that make you laugh), it is therefore as good as the original, a rare feat for a sequel. However, it must be said that overall, it is not as good a movie. Meet the Parents has a story that you'll never forget. Meet Fockers makes you laugh, but it doesn't have a story apart from the simple set-up: Greg, his fiancée and her parents travel down to Florida to meet Greg's parents. In the original movie, the discomfort Greg felt as he tried to please Jack was potent and contagious. In the sequel, the discomfort is second-hand as Greg worries about his parents' conduct with Jack. You also don't have the joy or discovering Jack's character (Robert De Niro) for the first time—in fact they've made Jack less human. On the other hand, the movie has other treats in store: Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand, who play Greg's parents. Forget the sequel, Little Fockers. (Last viewed: August 2010)

Big Stan DVDBig Stan
      2007 | USA | Laughs: 8.4 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Convicted of fraud, a wealthy scammer trains in the martial arts to prepare for his time in jail, where he becomes "Big Stan". If you can tolerate a moderate dose of adult themes, this movie will be a welcome surprise, not least because it reinvents the dynamics of situations often seen in movies, such as life in prison. The cast is excellent. The lead actor (Rob Schneider), who directed the movie, comes highly recommended via 50 First Dates, where he was the brilliant Ula. (Last viewed: June 2012)

Blades of Glory DVDBlades of Glory

Disqualified from the solo category for getting into a fight, two rival male figure skaters pair up and sign up for a couple skating championship in order to stay in the sport. Well-paced and visually striking (the directors come from advertising), innocent as in the olden days, keeps you smiling and perhaps sometimes laughing. (Last viewed: May 2010)

50 First Dates DVD50 First Dates
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 8.1 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.8
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The walrus minder at a Hawaiian aquarium falls in love with a woman who has no short-term memory—every day, he must make her fall in love again. A few laughs, lots of chuckles, very very sweet, and delightfully chilled out thanks to the Hawaiian setting and holiday music. It's perhaps my favorite romantic comedy; which makes sense, seing that the plot has elements of a "Groundhog Day" in reverse. (Groundhog Day is one of my all-time favorite comedies. In it, Bill Murray keeps reliving the same day, and remembers it.) (Last viewed: Jun 2010 August 2011)

Bienvenue chez les Chtis DVDWelcome to the Sticks (Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis)
      2008 | France | Laughs: 8.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.1
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The manager of a post office in the South of France dreams of getting transferred to a town by the Mediterranean. Instead, he gets transferred to the very North of France, which to him and his family sounds like the ultimate nightmare. This is a great movie. It delivers laughter at a solid pace, and the story is excellent. At least half of the humor stems from the very odd accent spoken by the congenial northerners, and you may need a good command of French to fully enjoy that. Nevertheless, even if it were half the movie that it is, this would still be a very decent watch. I was impressed to learn that Dany Boon, who was excellent in The Valet, was not only one of the main actors, but also wrote and directed the movie. (Last viewed: October 2012)
