I used not to be able to stand Jim Carey's facial contortions. Since then, I've recognized the man's genius, and I've gotten to a place where I can enjoy watching him and not ignore the faces, which still do nothing for me. I waited a long time to watch this movie because I assumed that it was for children, but I was wrong. In fact, there are several adult scenes in there. Nice photography (a Miami art deco look throughout), a good smile throughout and several good laughs. (Last viewed: August 2009)

After losing their jobs, two buddies travel to Aspen to return a briefcase which, unbeknownst to them, contains the ransom money for a beautiful woman's husband. A bit slow in the beginning, but the second half, after the duo arrives in Aspen, is very funny. In this movie, Jim Carey doesn't make faces. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Le Péril Jeune posterThe Good Old Daze (Le Péril Jeune)
      1994 | France | Laughs: 5.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Brought back together by a birth, four old friends reminisce about their senior year of high-school, 1975. This is the second film by Cédric Klapisch, the talented director of The Spanish Apartment and other little gems. This is a terrific and touching movie that captures the closeness of a group of friends at one point in life. Its point is not to be funny, but it is very funny and had me smiling and chuckling much of the time. I'm really glad I saw it. (Last viewed: August 2014)

The Man Who Knew Too Little DVDThe Man Who Knew Too Little
      1997 | USA | Laughs: 5.4 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.7
      wikipedia | who was involved?

If you're a die-hard fan of Bill Murray, you'll want to watch this movie once, if only for the last scene, where Bill's Cossack dance draws laughter in the burlesque tradition of old Chaplin movies. Other than that, the plot is only moderately engaging and occasionally funny. In the rather narrow "spy who doesn't know he's a spy" genre to which this film belongs, my first choice would be The Tall Blond Man With a Black Shoe. (Last viewed: December 2011)

If you can stand a certain amount of obscenity and crassness, you'll probably find a laugh or two in this animation, which is delightfully counter-cultural and subversive. (Last viewed: October 2009)

Rocketman DVDRocketman
      1997 | USA | Laughs: 5.2 (Watch Once) | imdb: 5.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The humor in this movie about an oddball astronaut is mostly on the ten-year-old level, and it's a relaxing watch if you're not expecting more. One gag made me laugh hard enough to feel my abs. Save this for a day when you're not in the mood to hear a lot of foul language. It made me curious to watch more Disney movies. (Last viewed: April 2012)

The Visitors DVDThe Visitors (Les Visiteurs)
      1993 | France | Laughs: 5.1 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.1
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Through the forgetfulness of a senile wizard, a knight from the Middle Ages (Jean Reno) is sent to modern-day France. A few good laughs in the first thirty minutes. Through the rest of the film, the humor is rather thick, reflecting the propensity of French comedy makers to create caricature characters—such as their all-time favorite, the effeminate male, grating as ever in this film. Many of the jokes will be lost in translation as they rely on language confusions between old and modern French. (Last viewed: May 2010)

BASEketball DVDBASEketball
      1998 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.5
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Right off the bat, I'm probably the wrong audience for this movie because I know nothing about sports. In the first quarter of an hour, I thought that was going to be a terminal issue. However, the movie started to deliver laughs and chuckles, perhaps one every five minutes, enough to make me want to hang on. The humor in this movie is an unusual mixture, some of it echoing with nonsensical themes out of movies of old such as Airplane. It's not high grade, but unless you're allergic to sports it may be worth a watch. (Last viewed: September 2012)

Rush Hour DVDRush Hour
      1998 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A Hong Kong detective and a LAPD cop must rescue the daughter of a foreign dignitary. The line between action and comedy is a worthy one to walk, as laughter periodically releases the dramatic tension (a fine example is Beverly Hills Cop). But no great magic happens in this film. I am a bit biased because I have sensitive ears and Chris Tucker's high-pitched voice grates me (I just realized that he was also in Friday and had the same effect on me there). Yet does make me smile, and the two actors definitely manage to produce some good chuckles. If you feel like scraping the bottom of the "watch once" category and you like fight scenes, then this is for you. (Last viewed: September 2012)

Kingpin DVDKingpin
      1996 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

An unlikely pair travels cross-country to Reno to compete in a bowling tournament with a prize money of a million dollars. This movie has its cute moments, but the laughs are rare. I would really not bother watching it unless you're a huge Bill Murray fan and want to catch him as a pro bowler at the start and the end of the movie. In that case, you'll also enjoy the short appearance of Larry the cameraman from Groundhog Day. (Last viewed: December 2011)

Delirious DVDDelirious
      1991 | USA | Laughs: 4.9 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 5.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

After a car accident, the writer of a TV series finds himself living in the world of his TV drama, a world where whatever he writes soon turns into reality. It's nice to see John Candy, and the movie certainly has a few laughs, but too few to overcome the plot's painful weakness. Bill Murray fans may want to sit through this movie once for the scene where John Candy impresses everyone with a virtuoso piano performance followed by an execution of a life-saving Heimlich maneuver… just as in Groundhog Day, which didn't come out until two years later! My Blue Heaven DVDMy Blue Heaven
      1990 | USA | Laughs: 4.8 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.3
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A New York mobster (Steve Martin) lands in a California town where he must live under the FBI's protection until he appears as a witness at a mob trial. In his new community, our mobster is a round peg in a square hole, and gives lots of work to the assistant district attorney and to the FBI agent charged with his protection. I laughed once and smiled a lot, but overall the rewards are too low to bother watching this instantly forgettable movie. (Last viewed: June 2012)

Welcome to Woop Woop posterWelcome to Woop Woop
      1997 | Australia | Laughs: 4.5 (Watch Once) | imdb: 5.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Deep in the Australian outback, a young New Yorker gives a lift to an equally young female hitch-hiker who seduces him then abducts him to a remote community where her father rules the scraggly populace and its kangaroo-meat-processing factory with an arm of fist—and shotguns. The situation provides an excuse for a funny and sometimes horrifying portrait of how Australians see themselves in their worst moments. (Last viewed: Aug 2001 October 2014)

Andaz Apna Apna DVDAndaz Apna Apna
      1994 | India | Laughs: 4.1 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 8.2

Highly-rated Indian comedy (8.3 rating on IMDB). From the thirty minutes I saw before giving up, the plot follows two young men who want to become involved in the movies. The characters, thick caricatures, are like a time machine to American movies on the 1920s. (Last viewed: July 2010)

WayneWayne's World

A pair of friends who broadcast a community TV show out of their basement are courted by a ruthless producer. Once I overcame my negative reaction to the all-out charge of goofiness, I settled into the story and enjoyed the movie, which has a few chuckles and a number of clever jokes.
