Three Men and a Leg DVDThree Men and a Leg (Tre Uomini e una Gamba)
      1997 | Italy | Laughs: 7.6 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.6
      who was involved?

Three friends are on their way to a marriage in southern Italy. Two of them are married to two daughters of the tyrannical hardware store tycoon who employs them. Now the third friend is marrying the third daughter. Naturally, the trip takes much longer than expected. This movie felt long at times (my lady companion who lived in Italy for ten years explained that Italians like to give time for emotional moments), but it made me laugh often, and it was refreshingly clean. It seemed that only half of the script made it to the subtitles, and you could tell that if you understood the language you might be rolling on the floor. But even without understanding the language, there is enough comedy in the situations to amuse you. The movie left me with a soft spot for these three friends, so it will be a pleasure to see them again in five years. Or perhaps sooner: apparently, this trio (known as Aldo, Giovanni & Giacomo) has made many films together. I enjoyed That's Life (Così è la Vita). Chiedimi Se Sono Felice is not worth watching except for one very funny moment. (Last viewed: November 2011)

      1963 | Italy | Laughs: 7.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Italian film by Dino Risi. A collection of vignettes showing men at their ordinary worst. Beautiful black and white photography. Akin to Seinfeld in the sense that the laughter comes from recognizing actions that are part of everyone's psychology, if only as a seed. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Till Marriage Do Us Part posterTill Marriage Do Us Part (Mio Dio, Come Sono Caduta In Basso)
      1974 | Italy | Laughs: 7.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.5
      who was involved?

Raised in a convent, married to a man who cannot touch her, a young Sicilian noblewoman is torn between her puritanical upbringing and her awakening flesh. Time and time again, her mouth says no but her body says yes: if only for the chuckles of these comical episodes (which are punctuated by a rousing music), the film is well worth watching. A skilfully-directed farce that is aging surprisingly well. (Last viewed: August 2013)

Cado dalle nubi posterCado dalle nubi
      2009 | Italy | Laughs: 7.5 (Laugh Out Loud) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

This is the fourth of Checco's movie that we watched. Even though the machine-translated subtitles were awful, it made us laugh the most, perhaps because it was the most raw. The movie follows a not-so-young man from the South of Italy who moves to Milan (in the North) to try his luck as a singer. The script cashes in on the stereotype of ignorant southerners vs. snobbish northerners, and it works. (Last viewed: September 2017)

Che Bella Giornata posterWhat a Beautiful Day (Che Bella Giornata)
      2011 | Italy | Laughs: 7.1 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Thanks to some string-pulling, an incompetent security guard obtains a job with the Catholic church. An attractive would-be terrorist of Arab origins selects him as the perfect vehicle to carry explosives into a monument.

This movie was a great excuse to showcase caricatures of Italian national traits. I'm sure some of the regional nuances were lost on me, but I laughed a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed the humor. The funniest Italian comedy I'd seen in a while.

The weakest part is the poster, which, incredibly, does not show Checco's female counterpart. (Last viewed: August 2017)

Smetto Quando Voglio posterI Can Quit Whenever I Want (Smetto Quando Voglio)
      2014 | Italy | Laughs: 7.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.0
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Out of work due to funding cuts and needing to make ends meet, a group of brilliant university professors start marketing a new drug of their invention. Oftentimes modern Italian comedies have an inconsistent "voice", dipping into other genres in midstream. Not the case here, and this was the most solid Italian comedy I've seen in a while. In some ways this may be because the production follows an "American formula", much like contemporary German comedies such as the Fack ju Göhte franchise. I laughed a few times and we smiled a lot. Don Camillo DVDDon Camillo (a.k.a The Little World of Don Camillo)
      1952 | Italy | Laughs: 6.9 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The priest of a small Italian village battles it out for influence with the newly elected communist mayor. Though they would not admit it, these two rivals are also best friends and usually end up on the same side. A touching movies that packs good humor thanks to Fernandel (the priest), a wonderful comedian. I particularly like his conversations with Jesus—who replies! Few are the movies from 1952 that a modern audience can still find funny and easy to watch. A great surprise. A French-Italian production. (Last viewed: July 2010)

Cosi E La Vita posterThat's Life (Cosi E La Vita)
      1998 | Italy | Laughs: 6.8 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.9
      who was involved?

This is a comedy by the same trio as in Three Men and a Leg. Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo are thrown together when Aldo escapes from jail and hijacks a police car. There are many chuckles, ans one extremely funny scene involving a fake telephone. Well worth watching once. (Last viewed: July 2014)

Eurotrapped PosterEuroTrapped (AmeriQua)
      2013 | Italy | Laughs: 6.4 (Watch Once) | imdb: 4.1
      who was involved?

Some very decent comedies sometimes have a low rating, and for some reason I had a good feeling about this movie when I saw that it was only worth a 4.3 on IMDB. A young American dilettante travels to Italy. Shortly after getting off the plane, he is robbed. Penniless, he comes under the wing of a group of party-going locals his age, takes a liking to a charming "princess", and becomes embroiled in a misunderstanding with the mafia. If you can stand a few subtitles and a view of Italy that is genuine—rather than the romantic image of tourist brochures—you could do worse than to spend an evening with this little movie, which is full of "real Italian humor" that translates very well into English. Italian, with Roberto Benigni. An innocent guy is seduced by a mafia woman because he is the spitting image of her husband, who is in hiding. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Tu La Conosci Claudia posterTu La Conosci, Claudia?
      2004 | Italy | Laughs: 6.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.3
      who was involved?

Three men are in love with the same woman, who happens to be married to one of them. The male actors are the famous trio from Three Men and A Leg. It's probably quite funny, but the subtitles on the version I watched were horrendous, so I can't really vouch for it. (Last viewed: July 2014)

Quo vado posterQuo vado?
      2016 | Italy | Laughs: 5.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.6
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A man who has a job for life in regional government is sent from place to place as the central administration tries everything to make him accept ever more alluring offers for early retirement. This was a great surprise—I love foreign comedies that are easy to follow while revealing lots about the local culture. Apparently as of this movie's release Checcho Zalone had become a dominant figure in contemporary Italian comedy. I'll be sure to check out his other works. (Last viewed: August 2017)

Sole a catinelle posterSun in Buckets (Sole a catinelle)
      2013 | Italy | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A nearly-bankrupt door-to-door salesman who has promised to take his son on a vacation gets "adopted" by a wealthy crowd where his rough manners work wonders. Not much will surprise you in this classic fish-out-of-water scenario. I laughed a couple of times, but the script isn't nearly as tight or pleasant as in Checco's two subsequent movies, Que Bella Giornata and Quo Vado. (Last viewed: August 2017)

La matassa posterLa matassa
      2009 | Italy | Laughs: 4.5 (Chuckle) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Two cousins divided by a family feud find themselves entangled in the management of the family hotel, prey to extortion by gangsters.

This was the first time I watched a movie by the comedy duo Ficarra & Picone, whose series Incastrati I had ejoyed.

At first, Valentino Picone's overacting made me cringe, but the movie soon found a reasonable balance. It was entertaining enough to make me curious to watch other movies featuring the same duo.

L'ora legale posterL'ora legale

      wikipedia | who was involved?

When a small town's new mayor applies to the letter his election promise of applying the law — ending with cronyism and the practice of turning a blind eye —, chaos ensues.

According to several Italians I've spoken with, this pleasant film by comedy duo Ficarra & Picone does a great job of showing how things work (or don't, depending on perspective) in Italy.

Subject: Searching for crazy Italian movie

I watched this movie a long time ago (probably around 15 years ago) and it has just stuck in my head. I thought the name was something like "Avarre, averre" but it having been so long ago it may well be something utterly different. One scene really sticks in my head, where a pair of would be burglars end up having to hide inside a jukebox. Someone ends up pressing a button on the jukebox and the burglars end up having to sing a duet of "Only you". I don't remember much more about the movie apart from it being just super fun. If anyone can identify it, I would be very grateful!

Hello everyone! In high school, I watched a funny, family-friendly (most likely PG) Italian movie where a princess is trying to fill in the footsteps of her mother, who was a very good person -- did a lot of charity work etc. Meanwhile, there is a man who is very scruffy and stupid (is willing to have a new medicine tested on him for money) and moves into her castle after they meet and the guy's friend move in and that is basically all I remember. Could somebody please, help me find the movie? It was hilarious and I would love to share it with my family! Thanks in advance!

I was in Italy this past summer and saw a film but I don't know the name. It appeared to be either late 70's or early 80's. It was not subtitled and I do not speak Italian but it appeared to be about the antics of a group of friends and their rivalry with another soccer club. The lead actor had a big afro kind of hairdo and he meets a girl when he visits the hospital after accidently hurting the girls brother in a fight. The group of friends love to play pranks, one of which involves making a friend believe he has won the lottery.

Help. Would love to know the name of the Italian comedy from the 60s or 70s about rustic parents stuck in a world of modern art and music while visiting a daughter in Milan, I believe.

Hello,

I am trying to find the name of an Italian comedy film I saw. The story is of a man (I think he was an ice cream seller) who gets magical powers and becomes a knife thrower and travels from town to town. For some reason he loses his powers and the people force him to throw knifes at his brother-in-law and he says "he is going to make a st. Sebestian of me. " I thought that was one of the funniest lines I have ever come across. Would you know the name of this movie? Thanks.

Hi Tony,

Perhaps it is the classic "Pane e Cioccolata" ("Bread and Chocolate"), which has some famous moments on a chicken farm in Switzerland.

Not a laugh-out-loud comedy, but a great movie, one of my favorites.
