Rocketman DVDRocketman
      1997 | USA | Laughs: 5.2 (Watch Once) | imdb: 5.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The humor in this movie about an oddball astronaut is mostly on the ten-year-old level, and it's a relaxing watch if you're not expecting more. One gag made me laugh hard enough to feel my abs. Save this for a day when you're not in the mood to hear a lot of foul language. It made me curious to watch more Disney movies. (Last viewed: April 2012)

Talladega Nights DVDTalladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
      2006 | USA | Laughs: 5.1 (Broken Comedies) | imdb: 6.6
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

This review is in two parts: the day I gave up, and the day I persevered. Part 1. Will Ferrell is often too loud for my taste, and in this movie he breaks all records. He plays a star race car driver. I hung on for as long as I could because of the Southern accents, but after 23 minutes of ear-busting chaos (and not a single laugh), I had to give up. Firmly in the unwatchable category. Part 2. After reading some glowing reviews, I gave it another shot. It turns out I had stopped at the low point of the movie (the bar scene). After that, the story twists, and the characters become more attaching. Perhaps worth watching once if you can handle loud acting. (Last viewed: July 2012)

The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming DVDThe Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming
      1966 | USA | Laughs: 5.1 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.1
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

The crew of a Russian submarine stranded on a small island off the coast meets the villagers. You probably won't laugh (hasn't our sense of humor changed since 1966), but you might still find the movie irresistibly cute. Personal theory: Alan Arkin's Lieutnant Rozanof inspired the personage of Borat. (Last viewed: June 2010)

The Love Guru DVDThe Love Guru
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 3.8
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

This Mike Myers film is one of those comedies that starts very poorly but gradually improves—the opposite of Weekend at Bernie's. Perhaps the awful start explains the record-low IMDB rating (3.8 last time I checked). I got up after twenty minutes to grab a cup of tea, unsure of whether to persevere, and thought to myself, "this is the movie you make when you want to waste your public capital and tell the world you no longer want to make movies". But by the end, I felt that the writers had done a really good job researching the world of spiritual teachers, though not a great one at making us laugh. Largely, the Love Guru is an excuse for another extravagant character for Mike Myers to play, and he does a good job not relying on many tricks I never want to see again because of overuse, such as his peculiar way of raising his eyebrows. This is no Austin Powers in the laughter department (though it is almost as crass), but if you've had a passing acquaintance with the "guru business", you may appreciate many of the film's elements. The Ladykillers DVDThe Ladykillers
      1955 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A mild-mannered gangster (Alec Guinness) rents a room from an elderly lady to plot his next robbery. While he and his accomplices hash out details in the room, they pretend to rehearse for a string quintet. A charming movie that made me smile, but not laugh—surprisingly for a comedy that features Peter Sellers: he was grossly underused by the script, an Alec Guinness vehicle. (Last viewed: June 2010)

Anger Management posterAnger Management
      2003 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.3
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Wrongly accused of having lost his temper on an airplane, a man is ordered to undertake intense training in anger management under the supervision of a therapist who displays several symptoms of lunacy. Despite its numerous shortcomings, the movie made me laugh several times, thanks largely to Jack Nicholson's strong performance. This not Sandler's worst movie; nor (by far) is it his best. But if you're not expecting fireworks, the movie should have enough to keep you entertained. (Last viewed: May 2015)

Legally Blonde posterLegally Blonde
      2001 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.3
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

I can hardly believe it took me nearly fifteen years to watch this movie, but the numbers don't lie. I guess I was prejudiced against it without knowing what it was about. As it turns out, this is a movie about prejudice, probably the same kind of discrimination that kept me away from it all those years. Dumped by her boyfriend who thinks she is not smart enough for him, a young woman gets admitted to the same law school he is about to attend, but finds that people there are also very much prejudiced against her blonde hair—or perhaps more accurately her blondeness. I may not have laughed, but I chuckled a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the film. Another thing I did not expect: the movie is devoid of obscene language and nudity. (Last viewed: July 2015)

BASEketball DVDBASEketball
      1998 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.5
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Right off the bat, I'm probably the wrong audience for this movie because I know nothing about sports. In the first quarter of an hour, I thought that was going to be a terminal issue. However, the movie started to deliver laughs and chuckles, perhaps one every five minutes, enough to make me want to hang on. The humor in this movie is an unusual mixture, some of it echoing with nonsensical themes out of movies of old such as Airplane. It's not high grade, but unless you're allergic to sports it may be worth a watch. (Last viewed: September 2012)

I Love You ALice B Toklas DVDI Love You ALice B Toklas
      1968 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

I have loved this movie for a long time. It doesn't really make me laugh anymore (and I don't recall whether it ever did), but it makes me grin to the point where my jaw muscles are a bit sore. Intrigued by his brother's hippie girlfriend, a Los Angeles lawyer abandons his pinned-up lifestyle for long hair and groovy clothes. But leaving the "square world" doesn't mean you don't have to compete—are you as hip as the next guy? In some ways, this is more a documentary than a work of fiction. One of Peter Sellers' better roles, and that's saying a lot. (Last viewed: Mar 2008 October 2012)

A Foreign Affair posterA Foreign Affair
      1948 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 7.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

When a congressional committee comes to post-war Berlin to inspect the morals of American soldiers, a nosy lady gets too close to a captain who is fond of an entertainer with a nazi past. Past the first couple of minutes, once I got used to the quaint 1940s voices, I fell under the charm of this very pleasant and funny movie, which didn't unleash laughter but made me smile throughout. Observe and Report posterObserve and Report
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Chuckle) | imdb: 5.8
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A shopping mall's security guard takes himself to be a supercop. At first the lead character's acting was so over the top that I nearly gave up, but in the end I'm glad I sat it out. Even around the 30-minute mark, you could be forgiven for thinking that the best part of the film is that its main character rides a gorgeous white-and-blue 1988 Honda Transalp. But the movie is unpredictable, and that is its chief strength. It is also short, as befits fast-food comedy.

There are a number of good lines, and I'm glad to report that there were a few chuckles here and there. Warning: this is not a family movie.

Due Date DVDDue Date
      2010 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Watch Once) | imdb: 6.5
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A classic "odd couple" scenario: fate forces a square business man and an eccentric actor to travel together cross-country. Apart from the one nod to the crass crowd—apparently an obligatory gesture in the 21st century—this is a pleasant watch with a few laughs. I actually liked it more than Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Both lead actors were good. I enjoyed Zach Galifianakis a lot more than in movies where he has to compete with a crowd of actors for attention. I'd like to see more of him in lead (comic) roles. (Last viewed: September 2012)

Date Night posterDate Night
      2010 | USA | Laughs: 5.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 6.3
      wikipedia | who was involved?

Once a week, to overcome the routine, a married couple with two turbulent kids hire a baby-sitter and treat themselves to their "date night"—usually a tame affair at a local family restaurant. One week, on a whim, they drive to nearby Manhattan, where everything goes terribly wrong and they soon find themselves chased by blood-thirsty mobsters. The two lead actors did a good job and the film had funny moments, but there was too much filler in between. The cast cannot be blamed for the tiresome plot. I'd suggest skipping this one. A young woman on the rebound falls in love with a serial killer. Despite the threadbare script, the film has some very funny moments. We weren't sad we watched it. (Last viewed: May 2016)
