A Shot in the Dark DVDA Shot in the Dark

Jacques Clouseau in a movie without the Pink Panther diamond (or the Pink Panther theme music). Since his first film, Clouseau has acquired a silly accent, a servant (Kato), a superior (commissioner Dreyfus), while his erstwhile innocent charm has turned into mild idiocy. Clouseau is convinced that Maria Gambrelli, a cute maid at the Balland residence, is innocent of the murder of Miguel the driver, even though she was found with the murder weapon in her hand. This early Pink Panther may not make you laugh out loud, but it has an enduring charm, thanks in part to magnificent photography of Paris streets in the 1960s and of unlikely settings, in trademark Blake Edwards style. Unfortunately, so memorable it cannot be watched often. (Last viewed: September 2009)

Twelve years later, a new Sir Charles, and an acrobatic theft of the famous diamond somewhere in a country that could be Iran. Clouseau's accent has thickened. Indeed, the character has become a caricature of the original. And the movie is funnier than the original, though not as classy. With his Clouseau-phobic fixation, Dreyfus is way over the top. Along Came PollyAlong Came Polly
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 7.5 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.0
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

On his tropical honeymoon, an insurance man gets cuckolded by his "perfect bride". Back in New York City, he bumps into a former classmate and falls for her despite her bohemian lifestyle, at odds with his obsession for computing risks. This is a very funny movie featuring Ben Stiller in his classic Meet the Parents persona. It was also the first time I saw Jennifer Aniston in a role of any substance. I will gladly watch it again. Three stars. Even if you're allergic to Woody Allen's output of the last few decades (which I am), I suggest you overcome your reluctance and watch this movie, Allen's best. A New Yorker finds himself embroiled in the power struggles of a South American dictatorship. No mistake about it, in Bananas, Allen emulates the style of New Wave film master Jean-Luc Godard in movies such as Breathless and Pierrot Le Fou. The sad conclusion: Allen was a whole lot better when he was imitating Godard than when he started imitating himself. (Last viewed: August 2009)

Shaken by his mentor's demise, a mobster (Robert De Niro) seeks the counsel of a psychoanalyst (Billy Crystal) who reluctantly gets acquainted with the underworld. The string of uncomfortable situations and the interplay between the two main characters keeps you smiling. Don't bother watching the sequel, Analyze That. (Last viewed: September 2010)

Starsky & Hutch DVDStarsky & Hutch
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 7.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.1
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Ben Stiller makes a great Starsky. I don't know if Owen Wilson makes a great Hutch, but he makes a great partner for Ben Stiller in this homage to the classic 1970s cop TV series. The series' formula was action with a smile. Here, the ratio has been inverted: the film is definitely a comedy, though it sports an entirely bearable drug-deal-plot as an excuse to see the two comedians do donuts in their gorgeous red-and-white Gran Torino. Dinner for Shmucks DVDDinner for Shmucks
      2010 | USA | Laughs: 7.3 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 5.9
      wikipedia | who was involved?

An ambitious professional receives the mission of inviting an "idiot" for dinner to entertain his boss. Many laughs in this Hollywood adaptation of The Dinner Game, one of the funniest movies ever, but the US version pales in comparison to the French original. Well, it's Hollywood, and they just had to show the dinner—easily the weakest scene in the movie; it truly is a dinner for shmucks, and the shmucks are the Hollywood people who asked for the dinner scene. Oh, and the movie also had to feature an utterly stupid romance. On the redeeming side, I was thrilled to see Jemaine Clement, a brilliant New Zealand actor (Flight of the Conchords, Eagle vs Shark). Stripes DVDStripes
      1981 | USA | Laughs: 7.2 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.9
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A young man who has almost made it a point to lose his job and his girlfriend convinces his best friend to enlist in the army with him. Neither of them is prime material for training camp. This movie is something like the army version of Police Academy, and one of Bill Murray's finest comedy roles. It has some good laughs and likeable characters. To be savored again and again. Mean Girls posterMean Girls
      2004 | USA | Laughs: 7.2 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.0

A sixteen-year-old who has been home-schooled in Africa enters a high-school in the States. All of a sudden, she must adjust to a world where the nicest smile is often used to cover the meanest intentions. The plot is nothing special, but it's a fun watch—I smiled a lot and laughed a few times. (Last viewed: December 2013)

Ghost Town posterGhost Town
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 7.2 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.7
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

After dying for a few minutes during minor surgery, a selfish New York dentist starts to see ghosts who pester him to help them with their unfinished business. One of them leads the dentist to grow fond of his ex-wife. I liked this movie a lot. The story was good, it was well put together and it made me laugh. Ricky Gervais does not always work for me, but he did a great job, as did the other actors. (Last viewed: October 2013)

Road Trip DVDRoad Trip
      2000 | USA | Laughs: 7.1 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.4
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

A college road movie that is not completely crass despite some nudity and an adult video tape at the core of the plot? Yes, it's possible. A college student travels cross-country with his friends to retrieve a tape that was erroneously sent to his long-distance girl-friend. The story is well told, and it's much more funny than it is raunchy. (Last viewed: October 2012)

What Happens in Vegas DVDWhat Happens in Vegas
      2008 | USA | Laughs: 7.1 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.1
wikipedia | dmoz | who was involved?

Two strangers get married on a crazy night in Vegas. Back in New York, a judge forces them to live together for six months (the result of a dispute over a three-million-dollar jackpot). I discovered recently that I enjoy comedies with Ashton Kutcher, and this one is no exception. Diaz is a perfect counterpart to his engaging smile. It's not brain science but it's good clean fun, and by clean I mean that you don't hear all the foul language that seems to litter so many comedies nowadays. Still smiling the morning after.

EDIT: still fun ten years after the first viewing. (Last viewed: Sep 2012 August 2022)

So I Married An Axe Murderer DVDSo I Married An Axe Murderer
      1993 | USA | Laughs: 7.1 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

A series of coincidences makes a hesitant young man wonder if his girlfriend might be the serial "honeymoon killer" his mom read about in the National Enquirer. A chance for Mike Meyers to polish two of his characters four years before Austin Powers. The laughs are there, but somehow I looked forward to the movie ending, perhaps because I have overdosed on Mike Myers' antics. (Last viewed: December 2011)

Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World posterLooking for Comedy in the Muslim World
      2005 | USA | Laughs: 7.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 5.4
      wikipedia | who was involved?

The U.S. State Department supposedly hires comedian Albert Brooks to travel to India and Pakistan to investigate what makes Muslim people laugh. He sets up shop in New Delhi with two government goons and a local assistant. This is one of those movies where the low imdb rating belies a comedy gem. Although there were no laugh-out-loud moments, the humor was subtle and relentless, making me smile and chuckle throughout. I'll be embarking on a quest for more material by Albert Brooks.       1985 | USA | Laughs: 7.0 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 7.0

At a school for extraordinarily gifted children, the pupils unknowingly work on creating a horrifying weapon. This movie would be worth watching for its 1980s charm alone. It also has enough good laughs to deserve a spot on your shelf of comedy videocassettes. (Last viewed: April 2016)
