Another subtitled comical treasure from the land of camembert. The aging owner of the prestigious Duchemin culinary guide uses all his cunning to foil the plans of a packaged food moghul. With two comic actors at their peak (Louis de Funès and Coluche), this movie makes you laugh without a hint of profanity. It was a real treat to discover this little gem 30 years after it came out. Inspecteur la Bavure DVDInspector Blunder (Inspecteur la Bavure)
      1980 | France | Laughs: 7.6 (Laugh and Smile) | imdb: 6.2

A young inspector who entered the force at the bottom of his class finds himself saddled with a journalist who sets up a high-profile scheme to meet a man she fantasizes about, an attention-seeking criminal (Gérard Depardieu). The plot's long set-up (when one gets to know the character) is really funny. As often with this kind of film, when the director decides that it's time for something to happen, the comic value drops near zero, while the action fails to capture your interest. I'll watch it again as the main actor (Coluche) is a delightful comedian. (Last viewed: October 2011)

Through a series of misunderstandings, a small-town math teacher is reported to be the lover of a foreign movie star. This comedy starts weak but gains momentum and delivers a few good laughs during the second half. I was thrilled to recognize in the headmaster the brilliant Colonel from The Battle of Algiers, an unforgettable documentary. A good surprise from a little-known film. (Last viewed: April 2013)

The staff of a cramming school is determined to make their students pass their high-school graduation exams. The students are determined to have a good time—and that excludes studying. This movie reminds me a bit of the original Police Academy, though it's not as funny. The movie takes a good twenty minutes to get into gear, but if you make that investment, you'll be rewarded with an entertaining hour or so. (Last viewed: September 2012)

The crew from the original Under-Gifted travels to the French Riviera to rescue Bebel's girlfriend from the claws of a crooner intent on seducing her. This is not one of the great French comedies, but if you're in a tolerant mood and don't expect a laugh a minute, this is entirely watchable. For starters, it's not vulgar, which places the movie well ahead of the many French comedies ridden with below-the-pants humor. (Last viewed: October 2012)

Les Bidasses en Folie posterThe Five Crazy Boys (Les Bidasses en Folie)
      1971 | France | Laughs: 3.0 (Don't Bother) | imdb: 5.1
      who was involved?

Five rebellious young men get called in for their mandatory year of military training. The film takes a really long time to get going. For the first half hour or so, our anti-heroes just muck around a small town trying their hands at various little jobs to pay for musical instruments. Once they get pulled in, there are some good chuckles, all in the vein of what you expect from army comedies. Overall I'd say this is not worth watching except perhaps for historical value. This sequel to The Five Crazy Boys continues their adventures in the army. It's watchable and well-intentioned but didn't manage to make me laugh. If you're really in the mood for an army comedy, go watch Stripes or Hill Halfon Doesn't Answer. (Last viewed: August 2014)

To fill a large order, an industrialist converts his house into a factory, leading to domestic trouble. I don't like noise, and this movie is very loud. Even without the noise, it's just not funny, apart from a few chuckles. (Last viewed: September 2012)
