The manager of a post office in the South of France dreams of getting transferred to a town by the Mediterranean. Instead, he gets transferred to the very North of France, which to him and his family sounds like the ultimate nightmare. This is a great movie. It delivers laughter at a solid pace, and the story is excellent. At least half of the humor stems from the very odd accent spoken by the congenial northerners, and you may need a good command of French to fully enjoy that. Nevertheless, even if it were half the movie that it is, this would still be a very decent watch. I was impressed to learn that Dany Boon, who was excellent in The Valet, was not only one of the main actors, but also wrote and directed the movie. (Last viewed: October 2012)

The chief policeman of a village of Provence (a region in the South of France) is transfered to the "big city": Saint-Tropez, tourist mecca on the Riviera. There, he must confront nudists, art thieves and the boys who circle around his lovely daughter. Past a certain age, comedies often lose their power to make me laugh. This 1964 movie was a beautiful exception. (Last viewed: October 2011)

In this sequel to The Policeman from Saint-Tropez, against the same backdrop of the French riviera, the gendarme and a high-society lady fall in love. When I find myself chuckling all by myself, that's a sign that a movie is funny. This cute movie might be as funny as the original—I'm not sure as I watched them one year apart. If you watch them back to back, let me know. (Last viewed: September 2012)

This first sequel to The Gendarme of Saint-Tropez has its moments, and is nearly guaranteed to trigger a laugh or two. It's always fun to see the French poke fun at themselves, something that they somehow manage to do even better than all the other people who poke fun at the French. But the plot is just not very engaging, despite the honorable efforts of the two top actors, who do manage to keep you entertained. Definitely worth watching once, but I probably won't want to watch it again. (Last viewed: October 2011)

A young man whose dad runs a gay night club must introduce his "parents" to his girlfriend's ultra-conservative father in order to get married. I'm not a fan of over-acted drag queen acts as a comedic device, and there's quite a bit of that in this film. Fortunately there's also humor in other places thanks to a decent script and fine actors (such as Michel Galabru, who always makes me laugh). It turned into a pleasant watch with many chuckles and a lot of smiles. (Last viewed: July 2014)

The staff of a cramming school is determined to make their students pass their high-school graduation exams. The students are determined to have a good time—and that excludes studying. This movie reminds me a bit of the original Police Academy, though it's not as funny. The movie takes a good twenty minutes to get into gear, but if you make that investment, you'll be rewarded with an entertaining hour or so. (Last viewed: September 2012)

      who was involved?

In 1930, a Parisian doctor thinks he has stumbled on the perfect scheme. He convinces one of his patients (then 59 years old) to retire in a house the patient has bought on the Riviera, and to sell that house to the doctor's brother against a sum to be paid yearly as long as the man lives. Certain that the man only has two years to live, the doctor believes he has cooked a great deal for his brother. However, the climate of southern France seems to benefit the supposedly dying retiree. This movie that spans forty years is a really fun watch—though definitely in the light-hearted category, as it's designed to make you smile rather than laugh. (Last viewed: September 2012)

      who was involved?

I hunted this movie down because I was desperate for another chance to see Jacques Villeret, the main actor of The Dinner Game. The price was too high. This movie has very little in the way of the witty dialogue often found in French comedies. Indeed, you can barely hear the actors speak under the loud and awful rock music that blares throughout the movie. The sound editing may very well have been done on a Walkman. I watched this movie so you wouldn't have to: unless you're masochistic, give it wide berth. (Last viewed: September 2012)

La Cuisine Au BeurreCooking with Butter (La Cuisine Au Beurre)
      1963 | France | Laughs: 2.0 (Light-Hearted) | imdb: 6.5
      who was involved?

A lazy Frenchman who stayed in Germany with a concubine after the war returns his town in the South of France where everyone thought him dead. He tells everyone that he was held captive in Siberia. His wife has remarried with a serious worker from northern France who has turned the man's former restaurant into a bustling business, and who invites him to stay awhile. This is a light-hearted movie that features the clash of cultures between the North and South of France, symbolized by the use of butter or olive oil in the respective regions' cuisines. It may have made people laugh in simpler times. Today there is little reason to watch it, except perhaps as a document. (Last viewed: August 2014)

A young woman visits a relative's castle to claim an inheritance, accompanied to her lover who claims to also be part of the family. A love imbroglio ensues. Despite the title and the Serge Gainsbourg unaging eponymous song, the film feels very dated. (Last viewed: January 2016)
